Has anyone bought a new trailer recently?

Or even just priced them?

I know there are many, many variables. I'm just wondering what the ballpark might be, for a brand new trailer for a C22 or similarly-sized sailboat.

I looked for a pontoon boat recently and it was 2500 for one to fit a 20' pontoon.

Not sure if that is helpful or not.

It's more than I knew a minute ago! :D

Did it have brakes? Was it galvanized?

Does it need to be NEW new? Or just new to you? I regularly see trailers on the various area Craigslist listings. Always worth a look, in case they might work.

I'm curious about what "new new" trailers cost.

Not in the market right at the moment. Just curious. :)

Quotes two years ago ran about $3700 for a Capri 22 wing keel - galvanized dual axle, brakes, tongue extender.

I'm looking for a 22 size trailer for a Starwind 22 myself (new is NOT required, by far! It just has to be in working order. I know how to service bearings and such) -but quick looks lately haven't proven successful. The used ones, at least, seem to come in spurts.
AS for the Capri 22, I recall when that one was for sale -nice rig, was kept on a lake -I didn't have the loot to spare at the time (really nice setup according to what was listed -though I've never had a wing keel, just swing keels). Buying the Starwind 22 this week and eagerly looking forward to getting back on the water! :)

If I was to buy a trailer and deal with that I would probably go with aluminum. It doesn't rust and it is lighter. It is more money up front but if it lasts longer it is worth it (if you plan to tow and keep the boat a long time).

That being said my trailer is a 1989 and it has been dunked in salt water from time to time. It is in pretty good shape.

Yes indeed, that would be my dream: A brand new dual axle aluminum trailer, with all stainless hardware, aluminum rims, and electro/hydraulic disc brakes.

One o' these days ... :)

That is the first rate way to trailer.

There are a lot of manufacturers out there that can do an aluminum trailer but I am sure that it adds a bit of $$$$$$$$$ to the cost:eek:

Not sure if your Catalina 22 is swing keel or fixed keel. If swing keel, I would suggest going new for the Catalina 22 Sport trailer as that boat is the swing keel plus the hull is the same as your boat. The boat will sit lower, easy to launch and retrieve where a power boat goes, trailer is lower to the ground so hardly no sway as it designed for proper weight on the hitch and so on.

Either way, call Ron frisosky at 941-914-3890. Not only is he a Catalina rep but also designed many sailboat trailers over the years when as a representative for Performance but now for Sailors Trailors, aka Road King. He is a wealth of information but only call if serious.

I just bought two regular "A" frame style trailers off of Craigslist. They had bass boats on them previously. $600 for both. One is 19' overall and the other is 17'. I installed 12" risers and 2x8 bunks on the longer trailer and now have a Mac 25 (Venture 25) on it. It fits perfectly. I just put a Mac 22 on the 17' one. The bunks for the 22 only needed to be raised about 3" to fit the boat. To summarize, you can get really nice used trailers very reasonably priced if you look around a bit. Your Catalina 22 would need bunk risers about 18" off of the frame cross members with 2x6 bunks. She'd settle right on.

Thanks Crazy Dave, that's some great intel right there! I won't bother Mr. Frisosky at this time, but I'll definitely save his name and number for if and when the time comes.

Just purchased a new galvanized trailer without brakes for my Boston Whaler dinghy for $1000. I would expect it would cost ~$2000+ depending on accessories like surge brakes.

For your boat check into a Trail N Sail by Road King from a Florida dealer.

Trail N Sail is actually Road King and the fellow mentioned earlier by me is the rep. for those trailers who will guide you to a local dealer to purchase the trailer from

FWIW, ALL AMERICAN TRAILER IN FT LAUDERDALE built me a very nice 2 axle alum trailer.

IIRC, cost was just over 3k, in 2009

on a c22, I think a single axle would be allowed. but I like a dual, it feels MUCH safer.

I suggest you contact Triad trailers.

Their float off trailer option is quite good.

For a Beneteau 285, Bare trailer with e-brakes, roughly $5500.... Float off option (surge brakes, galvanized, ladder, bow support, keel guides, 24 foot tongue extension, and airplane wheels dolly.. $8500. Very nicely built trailers.

After having 2 trailers painted, go galvanized... I don't see any reason to go aluminum.

I have flipped quite a few boats in my days.
The trailer market is a strange one. You an buy a new trailer for $2000, or dual axle for $3000... or a used trailer for $900+

BUT!

You can easily find a decent trailer sitting under a crappy boat for less than $500. Two years ago, I got a 19' seahawk fishing boat with a blown mercruser inboard for $400. It was sitting on a very sturdy dual axle trailer. I stripped off the good hardware and offered the hull as a project on Craigs List. A guy wanted a project to do with his grandson... I sold the hull for a $100. Got the trailer + cleats, compass, outboard engine mount, anchor chocks etc. for $400.

Around September, you will see a LOT of boats on eBay and Craigs List. Look for ones that are total crap but sitting on a good trailer. Even if you have to spend $600 on professional break installation, you will still end up ahead.
