It's called an anchor Einstein

It seems yeaterday was a delightful day on Lake Ontario. With a WNW wind at 15 and waves of short interval and height 2-3 feet it was exciting but well managable. We wore harnesses as YOT was developing a propensity to dance among the whitecaps as a precaution. With a reef in the main and the 100% hanked on it proved to be exhilarating sailing after weeks of 5 knots or less winds. Then there is this guy http://www.13wham.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/boat-crashes-at-irondequoit-bay-13571.shtml :snooty:

That cap is a winner!

Apparently clothes don't make the man when it comes to seamanship.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

If he doesn't know what an anchor is, he might not know what preventative maintenance is either.

Now if that wasn't enough we had this at the port of Rochester. http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S3494510.shtml?cat=565 This time there were injuries as was the incident on June 19th. Now there are calls to light the piers which is peculiar in that the piers have the standard navigation lights at the ends. One white flashing on the west and a steady green on the east. Then they wonder why there are calls to license all boaters.

Oh it's going to come to that, you better believe it. All the hell-raising in the world will not stop it, because just as soon as the powers that be figure just how to milk money out of it, so shall it be. Let a bunch more clowns like these make the news, some 'save the moron' group gets involved, and there you go..

I have nothing against power boaters, as I run fishing/diving charters for friends occasionally. What I do have a problem with, are IDIOTS that drive both power & sail boats.

We've all seen the worst on both style of boats. I have seen just as many BAD sailors as I have seen BAD power boaters. Only the propulsion differs.

I worked with a Kiwi a few years back who had a great comment. He told me, "Joe everytime you make something idiot proof they invent a better idiot." How true, how true. Worst part is the rest of us who take our responsibility when afloat seriously will always end up paying the price.

25,

Great words of wisdom.

And you're correct, it's us responsible boaters that have to pay the price............in our insurance premium increases.

Pop it up cephius. Love your signature line. Very appropriate for this thread. Sad as it is the people who are responsible be they motor or sail don't get the press. As CapnRon points out there are plenty of 'sailors' who should get some schooling. Anyone remember, "Ode to the credit card captains," on youtube?

I was an aircraft mechnic in the Navy. There is a check valve on the bottom of jet engines that allows any fuel to drain out after the engine shuts down. We had one engine that was streaming fuel when it was running. When I disassemble the check valve, I found it was installed up-side-down. There was an alignment pin to prevent this. Rather then flip the part over to fit, the installer had drilled a new hole for the pin!

I'm sorry, I've tried to open this video a half dozen times, and just can't seem to get past the opening scene..

Reminds me of years ago when I was a mechanical designer for an HVAC manufacturer. The shop was building a chiller and having trouble fitting an external pipe. Finally they called me because it was my design. They had already chopped and modified the pipe. The problem was all because they had it flipped end-for-end. Gee, do you think the bell shape on the one end should have been a clue?
