Carlf: ridiculous! Chief
I agree Chief I used Avgas in my Honda OB and it really made a difference, but there is no way in hell I'm paying $47.60/gal for it.

It's all been covered but I fought with my motor for quite a while, turns out the fix was new carb, plugs, filter, and a complete flush of tank and lines. I know how to clean a carb but the stupid EPA had this carb so metered out I went back one model year that had bigger ports/jets (Nissan/tohatsu). I always run pure gas and always run carb dry. I keep the old small port carb onboard as a backup, plus plugs.

If I read this right, the OP has a Yamaha outboard and cannot easily access the 10 mm bolts that hold the carb. On my Yamaha 8 I have to remove the faceplate that holds the choke switch and external fuel port to gain access. It's actually pretty simple, just 3 screws and pop off the choke linkage.

New carb

Yes I did get a new carb for my 2 stroke 8hp Yamaha as a back up and I switch them up each season after have cleaning it up and I think it was $110.00.
But what if after spending $300.00:eek: and find out it was some thing else
causing the problem, like a air leak or a tank having bad gas still in it.
I am just saying it's not that hard to take apart to clean and than see if it
was the carb or maybe something else.
I did have other problems like air leak and had to replace my complete hose and bulb unit and a stuck dirty engine connector for gas tank,if you clean the carb
and it runs really good than you know what the problem is and you will see the
jets are dirty for sure when apart.

Carb is off. Took several hours just to take off two bolts. Like I said, it was in a very tight spot.

Went to take the float bowl off but one screw was so torqued on that I was starting to strip the head. So I stopped what I was doing and went to the Yamaha dealer. They broke to hold of the over torqued screw for me . Came home and took the bowl off. There is a yellow and white film in the bowl. Looks like calcium or corrosion. I am sure it was from water in the bowl.

Have not had a chance to look at the jets but I am sure that same film might be on them as well. So yeah, you guys were right that the carb needs cleaning. I did not expect it to be THAT dirty after three years of semi use. I mean I did use the boat every months when I came home from Afghanistan.

After I take the carb apart I will tell you what else I found.

Thanks

Update:

Jets are very clean. No visible sign of issues or gunk. The only gunk found was in the float bowl at the bottom resting in the drain hole. Cleaned that out. I used a very fine needle just to make sure the holes on the jets were clear anyway and I saw nothing come out or restrict me in anyway.

Now, the video I watched about cleaning the carb was very good. The carb they had almost matched mine. Also, the exploded view I used showed a needle valve but I saw no such valve. There wasn't one in the video either. So I must assume the drawing might not be 100% correct.

Tomorrow I will try and put the carb back on. Two bolts, three links, and two hoses. Then I will fire it up and see what happens.

Cleaner

I would soak all parts in a good carb cleaner and use compressed air and blow
every thing like the jets and the needle jet in the float bowl.

Ha, Yeah, that caught me, had new plugs but the carb problems caused fouling and after the carb was 'fixed' i ended up chasing the wrong problem for a while. It's a fuel 'system'.
