the outboard on the dinghy my marina provides is run on propane. don't know anything about them but what a great alternative for so many reasons. no dealing with gasoline, gummy carburetors. and super quiet.

They have sold LEHR Propane outboards in our area for several years.
Here is a link:

I know very little about them however because I'm not in the market for one.

We have two of the 2.5HP Lehrs and they are fantastic - work well, no ethanol problems, and very reliable

Can anybody chime in on propane consumption? I fear I'll be in the market for a kicker in the future and I like the idea of propane, but how truly economical are they? I'd be looking at the 6hp or 9.9 hp.

Haven't tried the bigger ones but the 2.5 runs for a long time on the 1lb bottles. They come with a hose with a polnut fitting to take a standard grill tank too. Look on the Lehr website - they took an inflatable with (I think) the 6 out to Catalina and back as a demo-there was a video on the site

Do you mind sharing the serial numbers of your two Lehr outboard motors? I have one (serial number ends in 00090) and it was great last year, but has been a nightmare this year. (Propane leaks, water in oil.) It has been extremely challenging to find anybody to work on it on Vancouver Island where I am cruising.

I have the 5HP Lehr. I am running about 50% throttle and getting between 45 minutes to an hour off a 1 lb bottle. I haven't used it that much, maybe 3.5 to 4 hours so it is still in break in stage. I am very pleased with it. I have had a lot of problems with the ethanol with my previous outboard. There is a learning curve with this motor. You have to purge the air out of the line or you spend a lot of time trying to start it. The purge is easy, but they should put a purge button on the motor cowling. You have to take the cover off to purge it. Once purged, put the cover back on and reconnect the bottle and it starts on the first or second pull. It continues to start as long as the bottle is connected. Once you are finished for the day, you remove the bottle and depressurize the line. Next time you connect, you have to purge again. I highly recommend this motor, but Lehr could make a couple of improvements that would solve the purge issue.

Re: Propane outboard`s

the 2.5 weighs about 34lbs, the 5hp a little more. West marine sells them. We have 2 and they work very well, but you do have to purge as Jerry says. no ethanol problems, no stale gas issues! they do come with a polnut hose, so you can connect a larger tank if you need to - we just carry a spare 1lb bottle
