Single lever controls

I replaced my wheel steering on my Alberg 35 with a tiller and in the process removed the pedestal mounted engine throttle and shift controls, so I now have to add new engine controls in the cockpit. I'm looking at a Single lever type control where your shifting and throttle are integrated into one lever but I'm not sure if these controls will work with my engine.

The controls I'm looking at are The Teleflex/Morse CH2100 (http://www.pyacht.com/morse-ch2100-side-mount.htm)

My engine is a mid 1980's Westerbeke W21

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you gone to the Morse website and read the installation & instruction manual? That's what I'd do. The link says "two cables" - seems it would have to have one for throttle and one for transmission.

Thanks Stu,
I have gone through the installation manual and see that even though there is one 'magic' lever, there are 2 cables behind the scenes. My old setup also had both a throttle and a shift cable, but I have heard that the single lever controls are not always compatible with certain transmissions, but I don't know any other details other than that and I don't remember where I heard it. I guess a call to the manufacturer should clear it up though...

You're welcome. Glad to try to help.

That concept may well be true simply because of the "throw" required for the transmission cable to make the elver on it go far enough to engage in both directions. Good idea to call, but find out what the throw is on your transmission before you do so. Good luck.

That makes perfect sense as to why it would or wouldn't work and having never done this before I just couldn't figure out what the issue could be. That's something I can measure and take to the manufacturer to get help. Thank you so much.

If you know what transmission you have, you can most likely find those details on the web. With a Westerbeke, it's usually a Hurth. Scroll down to the Hurth manuals, 2 links

Excellent, I think that is exactly what I need. Looking through my owners manual I believe I have the HBW-50 (I'll have to confirm at the boat) and the manual on the C34 site shows the throw distances for the HBW-50. Perfect. Thank you very much.

mbowser,

One of the best additions we made to our boat was a single lever for eng. We found the Spinlock unit.

The BEST part was that for the lever it uses a standard winch handle. We were at a used/salvage yard and found some very low cost light weight handles for next to nothing $$$ wise. Bought a couple and use them.

When the engine is off, we just pop off the handle and NEVER have any of the lines (or toes) tangle.:D

I like the idea of removing the lever so it's not in the way. It looks like the spinlock unit is an add-on to an existing teleflex installation?

Our Spinlock was fitting was bought by itself back in about 2002 (I think). It drives 2 Morris cables to our Yanmar 2GM20. A BIG difference in engines, but thought they might carry one to fit yours.

I have the single lever controls (when you have twin engines and use them for docking, 4 levers would be a little nuts), replaced them after 15 years with the same Morse controls, and I like them fine. I think they would have lasted much longer (one side was still fine) but the the PO left a cable anchor clamp loose for too long and it caused some wear. Well, at least I have a complete spare. I suppose I could have replaced parts, but I was repowering and replacing cables at the same time.

Yes, 2 cables, no different than separate levers. They can be reversed to either push or pull.

However, there is a caution: because you can shift from forward full revs to reverse full revs, you need to teach all operators that they MUST pause in neutral until the engine reaches idle. Not a problem, just a word to the wise.
