Oday Javelin Tippecanoe Lake
Hello All!!

I recently acquired a 14' O'day Javelin and am new to dry sailers so please excuse the lack of knowledge on the subject. The p/o indicated that the mast was not original which seems apparent to me as there are no spreaders for the stays and the fore and side stays are pop riveted directly to the mast. Not to mention that I found the extra piece of the pole that was apparentley cut off in the bow compartment. I need to replace the stays as one is kinked and another is frayed. I will be trying to replace with turn buckle style ends for adjustment and was wondering if I should re rivet them onto the mast as they are currentley or try to locate a mast tang and attach that to the mast for the connections?

My second issue is locating dimensions and or good pictures of the floorboards that came in the earlier models of these boats for me to make some new ones. This model has the full length seats, no cooler, and an open bow storate area.

Lastly the centerboard weighs 50lbs and is a bear to get up. I have to give it the beans in order to raise it and it comes slamming up into the trunk and I fear that this may cause damage. Anyone have any ideas for me to gain a mechanical advantage over this beast? the cable is currentley routed out of the trunk to a small pulley just aft of the mast step and then back towards the stern where it terminates with another small pulley. The P/O then routed a rope from aside the centerboard cam cleat through the pulley and back through the cam cleat.

I appreciate any ideas here all! Let me know if you want some pictures so that you can get a better idea of what I have going on with this old gal! Thank you much!

Hmmm

interesting setup you have. The board sounds a bit heavy for a 14ft dinghy? It will get lighter when in the water and might be why it is so heavy? to overcome bouyoncy of the board. the pulley system seams a bit cobbled to me and not the original design? that tiny block that the rope goes around would work better if it was a larger diameter in my opinion. have you tried to lift the board from under the boat with your hand and not the pulley system? May be that the board is hanging up on the pivot pin? It should not be a difficult thing as young kids used these small boats.

I would install a "mast hound", through which you insert a curved "bow shackle" to hold the eyes of your new stays.. Here's the hound:

And the bow shackle:

Here's a link to some other solutions..http://www.mauriprosailing.com/us/category/1-Ronstan-Mast-Tangs-Hounds.html

At the lower ends... consider installing "quick release shroud adjusters" rather than turnbuckles.. besides being considerably less expensive because you won't have to swege on a threaded stud, using a thimble eye, same as the upper end.... the shroud adjusters can be easily reset, loosened to allow the mast to bend forward for downwind sailing, or removed for storage.

RDRake;

Sailboatowners also includes one for ODAy owners as well and there is under boat information, information on your boat as well which may help and other owners of the same boat who might be willing to help if you contact them direct.

The board is not bound up on anything as I can lower it all the way and lift it from under the boat...it is just plain heavy. Since the small pulley is swaged onto the cable I will attach a larger diameter pulley on a shackle for testing to see if that will assist.

I like the idea of installing a mast hound. Does anyone know of a shop that does custom swaging that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

First of all, get in the habit of calling them "blocks" not pulleys....that's the nautical term... and if you order anything online or through a catalogue they'll be listed as blocks...

Anyhow.... you can order the rigging from measurements taken from your old stuff... If you want to make it your self you can purchase the wire, and swege a thimble/eye in each end to connect to the boat... the tools for that are often available at west marine... you need the big lever model swege/press ... not all stores will have that at the workbench. You can purchase everything you need and put it together in the store. The DIY style would be the pressed collar type, not the roller type in your picture. If you want roller sweged fittings... you'll have to order that from an online rigging supply or find someone in your area....again, not sure where you are.

RD,

Those are drive rivets holding you mast tang on. On an 18 footer . Not to worry. Amazing strength in shear and pullout. Also, if you are considering replacing standing rigging, why not rope instead of wire? There are some very low stretch ropes available that even the big girls are using to stand the pole. Or make you own from SS wire rope and HomeDepot clamps? I have an aquintance that uses nothing else on his 20 footer. Will NOT use a swaged fitting. Go figure. I'll be goig rope next time.

There are several pulled rivet styles available (like Cherry Rivets) that are made for structural strength. The pop rivets found in your local hardware store most likely will not be up to the task. If in doubt go to your nearest airport and ask the folks doing work on GA (small) airplanes. They will likely have them.

This is what I'm talking about.....nicopress fittings to make the thimble eyes... please don't use the home depot clamp things... you won't be happy.

The nicopress will work for smaller diameter wire, for larger stuff you may need the hand swage tool to press the heavier collar swage on.. As stated earlier, many West Marines stores have the tool and parts at their instore workbench.

So if I go towards the mast hound what type rivets should be used stainless pop rivets or the cherry aircraft grade rivets as described above?

In order to get tension for whole rig with having the shrouds be on hole adjusters will I still need to go with a turnbuckle end that attaches to the bow tang?
