Need Battery Advice

I came across these used batteries by EnerSys that I can pick up pretty cheap. They are 12v 190Ah. They are made primarily for cellular back up, off shore and other uses.
I've attached a PDF with their specs. They are about 4.5"x12"x22" and weigh 132lbs.
The place I am buying them from will test the batteries by applying a load. These guys are pretty tech savy and if they say the batteries are in good shape they likely are.
My question is the upside and down side to using them on the boat. For their output they are relatively compact. They are completely sealed and require no servicing. I sure I can get at least a 1 year money back warranty on them.
They sell new for about $700, I can get them for $125 and better if I buy more than 1.
What do you think?

That is the 10 hour rate... At a 20 hour rate my guess is they are closer to 360Ah or so..

Assuming that is a good thing, is there anything that needs to be change as far as the controllers. Since these will be going into the Luger where the electrical circuits are non existent at this point what kind of controllers and power converter would you recommend.

Check their rated capacity as they seem quite big and might require an upgrade of your recharging options. Lastly they are quite heavy at 132 lbs so moving and installing them might be difficult. I like the way they are built and the idea of using them in a boat but I just think that particular model battery is just too big.

I for one have 3- 100 amp bats in my boat (hose bank ) and 1- 80 amp (start bank/reserve)
they are from a computer back up system they were 18 months old when i got them and cost me about $25.00 each...they are AGM...the way i see it ...its a win win thing for me i have had them for about 18 months now and in service in the boat ....if they crap out within the first 2 years or so...makes no diff to me as i can get some more or get new ones from the mfg at a higher cost ...now this is not for everyone but they do the job for me....if i ever change from that arrangement it will be because i lost my source..and at that time i will do the golf car 6v thing ...but for now i can put 3 of theses in the battery compartment ...and if you own a s2 you know that is a space designed for 2 group 27's... i did some work with a guy who is a battery back up company ...thats how i found theses and i noticed while working with him that a lot of the trolling motor fishermen got them from him and they all said that they were very good for useing all day long so i decided to give it a shot ...so at this point only time will tell

obtw i do like the batts you showed in the pics Frank but they are i think a little big for my application

Thanks Woody that make me feel better. They are a little taller but the footprint is not much bigger than the group 27 I have now in the C27.. The Luger 30 has tons of room for them.

A 18 month battery that only saw backup service in an air conditioned computer room at $25 is a true deal. I would just be a little concerned about the one that could have been used for three years or longer perhaps as a navigation beacon source of power in a warm and humid environment and only recharged depending on available sunlight via a fixed mounted panel.

theses came out of a NOAA center in the middle of a large building ...the cabinets were in a climate controlled room and my guess they were never called on for back up and yes it is a very good deal

Benny, checked the dates and they are pre 2009. At this point I suspect the scrap lead is all they are worth.
Woody's deal however sounds great. I just wonder if they ever restock on the west coast.

google Battery Back Up service company's in your area i am sure there are some

also look up battery salvage yards sometimes the backup company's will haul them straight to the salvage yard and some will be very new by date and usually they will sell them to you at scrap prices...i know this sounds hokey to some but a deal is a deal.....check with the big data centers in your area as well sometimes you get lucky.........


ps the more serious the data company the more often they change out the battries
