Here's a shot of our boat being launched this morning. A bit of haze still in the air as the fog was burning off, and yes... that's an ice floe passing by our marina!

Indeed. Our fleet has a conference call tonight to discuss the rules ramifications of icebergs on a W/L racecourse. Our first race sails by that spot in 72 hours.

Yeah...good luck racing around that mess! It's going to be a work weekend for us so most likely we'll be marina bound. We may fire up the motor and go for an iceberg cruise but probably not much sailing.

I believe the race rule book states the following:

Ice larger than what will fit into a picnic cooler shall always be considered the "stand on vessel" regardless of the tack, location, size, ownership, or fleet standing of the approaching vessel. It is commonly referred to as the Titanic Rule.

Titanic indeed. The trick is the size below the water. I took this picture on Sunday. This growler's above waterline bit was the size of small microwave. But add the huge underwater part and I'd guess it weighed well over 1000 pounds.

Not fiberglass friendly.

From Boatnerd.com as of yesterday: "Lake Superior is still about three percent covered with ice.

"The ice right now is still extensive in some areas," Ron Williams, with the National Weather Service, said. "We've had just tons of ice and it just hasn't been able to melt.”
The areas packed with ice include the head of the lake and the Apostle Islands. "Starting this weekend, we are going to have a south wind," Williams said. "It will push that ice to the north." "

Instead of the polar bear on the tiny ice-floe, that guy is the anti-global warming message!

I feel sorry for the guys up there wanting to get out. Beautiful pictures though. Almost jealous of the guy doing some good 'ol bar bee que on the little berg.

Do you think it would be uncouth to have a ice-berg chef salad on a ice-berg? *buh dum bah*

Yikes! Those stiff water pieces make an awful noise on the hull. Learned that with my 22 many years ago. Be careful up there. PS. Ontario is clear although I don't know where it went so fast, but we have lots of flotsam from heavy rains washing trees and so forth into the puddle.

We raced. Or we tried to. Only one race on one day, due to ice. This is what it looked like on the GOOD day, picking our way to the start. In the last ice shot, you can see the Madeline Island ferry picked her way thru the bergs.

Finally we get racing!

Then Bayfield for ice cream. And beer!

Already has.

That is hilarious! Reminds me of the Milwaukee-bred guy who crews with me - always in shorts, has his brats flown in, refuses to eat vegetables, washes his eggs down with cheap beer. Calls it the Viking Diet.

This was our "Iceberg Tour" over the Memorial Day weekend. Some of that ice was about 8 feet thick! I think as the ice started to break up, it heaved up and over eachother to make it appear to be that thick but I don't think it was ever that thick over the winter, just after breakup.
