Anyone familiar with this boat who could share an opinion? Pros/Cons? I've read elsewhere the large main can be difficult to raise.

We love ours, too. It's not near perfect, but I don't think there's anything in it's size or price range that can touch it for room and sailing fun. We love the big cockpit and regularly sail comfortably with 6, 8, or even 10 with the A sail up.

I use a Makita 20V cordless with a winch bit to raise the main, I only need a turn or two with the winch handle to finish it up to the top, works really slick and quick.

Check my profile, there's a You Tube link with several videos of the boat in all kinds of different sailing conditions.

Us also, it has been a great boat. You will need to reef early but good in light air. There are a bunch of reviews on this website on the 340 that I read when I was looking for a boat. I love the BR rig with no backstay also.

hunter 340 maryland
Bought it new in 2000
Still going strong
Same main
New jib (original lost in hurricane pulled out and shredded )
Had reinforced reef point put in new one and use often)
Have furling main so no comment on that
Reefed in 10+ keeps on her feet nicely
Very liveable
Love the large cockpit
Used to sail with 2 labs so walkthru was ideal ( both gone now .. sniff)

The Hunter 340 has an inadequate anchor locker but it may be okay for your situation depending on where you anchor. The cockpit starboard side lazerete is also very small, so I made it deeper by sacrificing some foot room (but is still plenty) in the aft cabin. Doesn't have a lot of storage, but then it's only a 34 foot boat.

We bought our 340 new in 1997 the first year they were produced. It has been a great boat and exceeded our expectations. We have the conventional full roach mainsail and have not had any problems raising the mainsail. If you lived close to me I would be happy to take you out for a sail so you can see first hand the raising of the main. When hoisting the main, need to make sure the mainsheet is slacked off, boom vang is slacked off and reef lines run free. I am 70 yrs old and no problem raising the main. The boat has been wonderful for us.
