Nice work, Doc! I'd like to do something like that someday, but it will have to remain on the backburner for the foreseeable future.

Sighed when I opened my dinghy bag and found the dinghy I picked up in the winter too sun damaged to use.... (It was -20c when I got it and it wouldn't get out of the bag when frozen like that.) It's for sale now. I mentioned in the add that it needs repairs. Unlike the power boater that sold it to me.
Maybe it's an omen? A hard shell dinghy is far better for places like the North Channel. When we mentioned looking for an inflatable, our mutual friend Mike Morris found a fibreglass "project dinghy" and insisted we buy it. Turned out to be a great choice - practically indestructible and you don't need to worry about where you beach it.

Added benefit is at it tows straight and easy. Actually, when under sail we can easily pull it up to the boat if we need to toss something into it. Almost no effort at all.

Wow. I think every sailor in the London area knows Mike. Fantastic guy. He was messing with a Puddle Duck last time I saw him. My first ride on a boat was with him on Rose (my first race too). Small wonder I bought a Mac.

i was chatting with Mike on Saturday. It was clean up day at the yacht club. FYC.ON.CA It's amaizing how much yoiu can get done when 60 or so people all chip in.
We turned the old docks into the new club house deck, raked leaves, painted the tenders, installed moorings, installed the sailing school docks and had a great lunch! I forgot to bring home my leaf rakes... (Handy as I didn't have to rake our lawn for the rest of the weekend!)

I purchased another inflatable dinghy today. An Avon 10. (Pink) It's in great shape! I still need to get another for the other boat and will get a hard one like Chris suggests on Friday. It's a water tender 10. (I'm at 7 boats if I include my canoe and that piece of junk flat dinghy...)
So it looks like I will be be to test the difference between the hard and soft. over the summer. (Do these things need to be registered in any way? No motors on either. I am using them for the charter. {Top right hand corner of the page.})
Edit. Mike is painting the bottom of the white boat. I told him I didn't want to see any runs in the paint.

Here they dont have to be registered if they are under 14' and dont have an engine. I'm in another country though, so YMMV

I saw a BIG Yellow Duck! Yep!
Made a video of it too. http://youtu.be/RkfFdhpKE3Q

Oh I also picked up a 27lb fluke anchor with 6' of crazy heavy chain. ($20) It will go on Transition as the primary anchor. I have a 16lb Bruce that will be on the boat too. Both are plenty big for the boat. I'd rather know the anchor is capable of holding more than the boat. Help me sleep if I know my charter clients can sleep without dragging anchor!
I still need to get chain for both boats. (I'll put the 6' of crazy chain on the 12 lb fluke I have for the Siren17.)
Any suggestions of length and size of chain? Strength?

Getting the Merc in shape for another season. Bought 2 new plugs and an impeller. Mine was hard and deformed. Need to drain and refill the bottom end. The marine shop recommended that I try a different 2 cycle oil in the gas to reduce buildup. They said any oil produced by a company the makes outboards is good. I have been using Pennzoil.

This weekend it's light sanding the hull and another coat of bottom paint. I dread this job :(

This seems like a good place to bury some sort of related to a Mac news (page 14 ;))..

I spent years on this http://zenpole.com/ but gave up on it a while ago as there were much easier ways for me to make a living (that dont involve possibly getting sued).

I had a patent on this and am about to assign the patent over to these guys http://www.marinelightning.com/

I think this works.. and use it myself on the boats I sail. I guess I can still post this as I own the patent for a few more days.. The idea will likely get a re-design. Maybe some new product will show up some day..

It takes me less than an hour to paint on a coat of albtive paint.
Try a 5" weenie roller with a 3' extension and a regular paint tray. Zip around the water line with painters tape then carefully paint from there down first with the roller. Then go like heck on the rest. Float the boat back to get the bunk areas.
The reason it takes me so long is the drying time when I float the boat back 6-8" to get ware the bunks sit.

I got another dinghy! Drove 2.5 hr to get it but for the price it was well worth it!
I don't trust my utility trailer to make it that far on the highway so I put it on the roof of my SAAB wagon. (I use the trailer mosty for taking construction material to the dump. Some day I'll go and the trailer won't come home...)

I now know the Watertender 10 will do 120 km/h. It's really hard to drive the speed limit it these cars...

I may be in a minority but I like the simplicity of the 26S trailer. But.. the jack on it was bent from the first day I owned the trailer and I only made it worse. Finally got around to replacing it. I thought I was going to grind it off but ended up only grinding off the handle and the bent up lower portion.

The new jack went on very easy (bolt on). If you look at the pictures, the bottom portion of it extends and is pinned. So when you get the trailer on the hitch, you just extend the bottom part up all the way and pin it. So far it looks good..

Very nice Walt. I may have to do the same thing eventually. Where did you buy the new jack? How much?

This is the one I bought - but Ive only used it where the boat sits.

Dutton-Lainson Bolt-On, Drop Leg Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 2,500 lbs

FYI, I was also looking for the type that rotates up but they all needed to go on the side where my spare tire is. (at least I think...)

I started making 2 new rudders. Twice, after the resin didn't kick between the boards...
First 3 pictures are round 1. Next 2 round 2.
I let round 1 sit for about 7 hours before I went to put them inside. When I was undoing the clamps I could hear the wood creaking. Not a good sign.
I'll give it a couple days this time.

Got it painted this weekend. The 4 hours drying time between coats was the slow part, so I pulled out a cockpit cushion and took a nap :)
Also, back at the garage I drained the outboard crankcase and refilled, replaced the impeller, put new plugs in, cleaned out all the mud dauber nests and cleaned the whole motor.

I got more vinyl stickers made for the other car. (It's almost exactly the same but purplish red with lots of dents and a totally rebuilt engine.) This time I am getting little pictures of sail boats too! Just so guys will stop asking me about what type of fishing charter set up I have.

I un-clamped my rudders and they didn't fall apart! Then I took measurements off the old rudder and transposed them to the new ones. Ready for cutting and shaping.
I got a little ahead of myself and cut out the part that fits in the aluminium rudder holder. (That's what makes the modified rudder preform better. It gets the leading edge more forward than the stock one. 2 3/4" in my case.) So I screwed the pieces back on so I can run it through the planer to get most of the material off before I go at it with the belt sander to get the foil shape.

That looks like pine...is it?

Jeff
Yes sir that is pine.
I will be wrapping it with 1 layer of a heavy weave glass and fairing it with a fairing compound. Then gel-coat and anti-fouling paint.
I didn't get anything done to them today. It rained.
I did go to the shop and dig out a couple belt sanders and bets.
