Hey folks, I have a Hunter 34 and I'm getting frustrated by the lack of a fibreglass pedestal like newer boats have. There's no place to mount instruments. Has anyone found an aftermarket solution? I'm installing an auto-pilot very shortly and as it stands the motor is going to have to be strapped to the metal steering post and it will look kind of Mickey mouse.

when i had my 34, i bought a larger (taller) pedestal guard, took a pipe bender and bent it on an angle. then i purchased a instrument pod and added 2 st60 gauges and the st 60 autopilot head (3 in total).

it looked pretty sweet as i recall, sorry i checked for photos but no joy.

if this is a ray marine auto wheel pilot the motor does not strap to anything ...there is a dog that has to be mounted on the pedestal with 4 screws that dogs the wheel disk and the motor is mounted to that disk....

Mine's mounted exactly like Dan's. Here is where I put the control box (inside lazarette), control head (just below little shelf on starboard side) and fluxgate compass (bottom of storage compartment behind door on port side of V-berth area).

Thanks Claude. How does it work for you?

Has worked really well except for a case of misconnection which I have to reconfigure this Spring: Chartplotter is connected to the Icom VHF radio thus giving DSC. Also connected to the AP (here is my misconnection problem) and I do get data on the control head (XTE, Bearing, etc) when operating AP for keeping boat a given bearing. However when I want it to follow a route from the chartplottert it shows "no data" on the display screen and of course does not follow the route. Does mean I will need to disguise myself into a pretzel again and spend some time in the lazarette figuring where the wiring will need to go.

I mounted the control head inside the little shelf box that Claude shows, it will just fit and the shelf keeps the weather off it. Downside is you have to look down a bit to see it properly but it is well protected. The other reason was the PO cut the wires when he de-installed it so I had just the right length to reach that spot. I put the compass on the vertical wood piece at the back of the compartment where the stuffing box is. It is at the top just under the aft berth floor and near center. Sorry I don't have pictures. It works well- my dock neighbour had his installed by a guy who is supposed to an expert and who probably billed him several hundred $$ and he struggled for most of the summer trying to get the compass swung. Turned out he had mounted the compass in a bad location- not low enough and not in center
