Self tailing wenches ????

You want the clutches to be far enough in front so that the angle thru the clutch is no more than about 10 degrees to the winch. That can be tricky with 4 clutches like I have. I didn't want the clutches to be so far out in front that I can't reach them from the cockpit conveniently.

So, I set the clutches so that at least 2 (on each side) have a fair run to the winch. Those I use for the halyards. The other 4 might have an angle which isn't optimal, but those are the clutches I use for control lines.

It sounds like you are pretty well set for wenches!

man i am winch poor...and a crazy enough to still think i need some #16st's
i am wondering if i use the aluminum ones on the cabin top and the #30st's for the jib controls if i will need much more than that ...i don't think i will be racing but do want to cruse and move around a lot ...gota lot to learn before the viking funeral......

Woodster.... sounds like you're pretty well equipped and certainly not jumping the gun on this upgrade. As you reasoned, the increased power benefit of the #16 over a #7 will be worth the upgrade... the self tailing feature is also worth it, because you can use both hands on the handle... in fact, you can invest in a palm swivel winch handle, which will give you some options when cranking up the main. Add rope clutch to your arsenal and you'll be set.... even your wife (sorry, I meant the Admiral) will be able to easily get the sail up.... and that's the very best reason for the change.

Self tailing WINCHES

Self trailers are a nice improvement, I agree with Jakdaw that also adding clutches is a good idea. Mount a multi line (4, 3?) clutch where your existing halyard winch is, then mount your new Lewmar 16st where your old cleat was. This allows for a wide range of options with the head sail halyards. Of course self trailers for the primary's get added at the same time. Don't scrimp on these: 30's will not do, 40's will serve you much better. (I have #34stc Lewmars on my 28 foot S2, my sails are smaller than on the 30') Money well spent if you plan on keeping the boat for a while.
