I want to install reef lines and run them back to the cockpit on a 30 ft sailboat. I 'm not sure what size lines are needed. I am thinking of 1/4" line, is that adequate?
this is the spec sheet on page 16 of the 9.2 manual it says 3/8 line...here is a copy..

regardsYabut Woodster, back in '77 when that manual was made, most running rigging was double braid polyester.
yes that is true and i agree with that ....
Nowadays, we have all kinda of Dyneema, Spectra, and Vectran cored lines (and blended material lines) which are phenomenally strong, and would allow for smaller (and lighter) diameters than stretchy 3/8" double braid polyester originally specced.
this is also correct except the smaller they are the more they cut in to your hands
So, if the original spec for reefing lines was 3/8", I wouldn't use 1/4" polyester double braid - not strong enough. But I would look up breaking strength specs on maybe Sta-Set 3/8", and match that to a similar strength hi-tech line in a 1/4" or 5/16" size.
there are times in life when having a larger line in your had is a lot nicer than having to fight arthritis and at those times i would love to have 3/4 " or even bigger but i would think that 3/8" would be about the middle of the road on this application
Which all might be of no concern, if you look at it from a budget standpoint. It might be cheaper to get 3/8" double braid poly, than to get skinnier, stronger hi-tech lines.
from a budget stand point its sort of a mute point because it not that much line involved maybe a couple of dollars......
