Bow Thruster

I have a Hunter e36 and I'm interested in a bow thruster. What is a good system e.g. external, retractable or tub through the hull? Are thrusters on a 36' boat worth the trouble and expense?

you can't fit a tunnel type in the bow of an e36 - too shallow and the water tank is there. Similarly, the retractable won't work without major structural work and relocation of the tank. I'd work on docking techniques and the springline method. The 36 is very maneuverable, especially in reverse, and not hard to dock.

Prop

You should look more at a new folding type of prop and way less $$$$ than trying to install bow thruster.
I have a Flex O Fold folding prop and have found it really made a big help
backing in stern first into a very tight slip other boats both sides of me and it also improves sailing and great motoring.
I have had this folding prop since 2007 and really think it has made me a better
docking sailor.
Look here and see what others think and I am sure that is going to be so many
different types of props that will help you.

nothing like a fellow seaman admiring your docking savvy.
This is not that hard. Does it take some practice? sure.

I'd recommend fabricating a couple of floats with anchors (bleach bottles and iron bits will work fine). Set them to mark the corners of a pseudo slip and practice docking the boat between them.

Have you looked at the exturn thruster? It's externally mounted, and the installation costs are a lot less than the tunnel mount. it can be mounted in front of the water tank on an H36.

the exturn does look interesting - but up here I'd worry about snagging a pot....
We have a midships spring line permanently attached to our dock with the eye on a short pole. As we back in, we pick up the springline and drop it on the midships cleat and the boat just snuggles in to the dock. Takes a little practice, but works well

Tried dealing with them. Very unprofessional in every respect.
Honestly, a 36 shouldn't need a thruster. Get a good feathering prop which will eliminate prop walk

Re: Stay clear of Exturn

I'm about to install a bowthruster in my 356 (same as 36) just behind the watertank. I have removed some of the interior to make it mere accessable and it is now ready for installation. The bowthruster I have looked at is Side Power EB 60/160. The preassure force is 60 kg and the diameter of the tunnel is 160 mm, made for this size of boat. I have a saildrive with a three bladed folding propeller (Flex-o-Fold) and really need a bowthruster from time to time. We dock with the bow 9 of 10 times and often with an ancor in stern. I have 35 years of experience handling boats but these new designs (high hull and shallow bow) is sensitive for sidewinds and very different from the old designs. I will try to keep you updated how it's progressing, but you can also follow the work on my website valetta.n.nu, in swedish.
