I am unable to find a domestic market for the westerbeke glow plugs.... the Local Westerbeke dealer here says they are unavailable thru them.
I have found the glow plugs in europe at a cost of about $100usd, per SET of 4... plus shipping at $70usd..

I am going to place an order within the next week, and if anyone wants a set, we can order all at the same time to save on shipping costs... we can ship many glow plugs on the same order for the same shipping costs....

PM me if you are interested in a set....

OR even better would be if you know of a domestic part number that is currently available, for a reasonable price.... Let me know.

following is a list I have compiled of the cross numbers for other manufactures, but none are available... either obsoleted or no longer available.... but this is not to say it is not available AT ALL from some unlisted supplier, its just that in my search I have not been able to find them in the US...

if you have one of the old glow plugs take it out and go to a good Napa store and have him look in his catalog i did this with one on a 2 cylinder and he got it some where in Maryland and had it shopped to his store seems like they were about $16.00 or so .....

centerline, woody's right. You're overcomplicating this. Unless you've tried this already. Sometimes Napa isn't the ebst place to go even though they have a wide avriety of parts. We have a small Mom & Pop auto store here that, coincidentally, sells a lot fo Npaa parts, but is not a franchise. This guy knows his stuff. YOu may have one near where you live. Good luck.

Try calling Hanson Marine in Mass. 781-639-1467 or 781-631-3282. I buy all my Westerbeke parts from them.

Scrape the paint off the nut part of the glow plug and read the brand and part #. I have never found a glow plug I could not cross reference to NGK... Usually about $6.00 at NAPA...

DO NOT try to cross reference the Westerbeke part number as it will just lead you down the rat hole...

my glow plugs are champion AG32... I have tried 4 different autoparts stores. but I have NOT pulled one out and tried to match it up yet... this will happen tomorrow.

I have tried to cross all the part numbers I listed to something else also, without success..

of the folks saying they DID get some locally, how about passing on a good part number that you KNOW works in the model 30.....

im really not trying to over complicate things, but I dont want to buy something to put in the GP hole just because it will screw in there... I would like to know what im buying is going to work properly and last for awhile....

Champion AG32 crosses to an NGK Y-302. My local NAPA has been able to get me pretty much any NGK glow plug I need. Sometimes I have to wait a couple of weeks but no big deal.

You might call NGK and ask if any of their other plugs will work. Sometimes the only difference may be glow speed.. 1-877-473-6767 prompt #2

IIRC that engine has a glow plug with a 15mm or 17mm nut section?

I have an NGK cross reference book but it is in .pdf.. If you want it drop me an email or pm

EDIT:

I just went through some invoices and had replaced glow plugs on a Perkins 4-91. They cost me about $40.00 each and IIRC I got them from RockAuto which is in the US. I think I used Bosch on that motor but could not be sure unless I went through stacks of receipts. (Rock Auto is my best recollection of where I got them)

I now remember doing the search for those and they are unique to that particular engine which was mostly used in tractors in Europe (Perkins 4-91, Westerbeke W-30, Leyland 1.XX etc.)..... Plenty of them in Europe but tougher to find here.

I called NGK yesterday, and they were very helpful in searching for ANY glow plug in their database that would fit, and they had nothing.... with no leads elsewhere.

BUT, a ray of hope..... it may not be the glow plugs.
with the shore power plugged in, and the battery voltage sitting at 13.6, when I press the GP button, the GP line voltage drops to 10.3.... this tells me something is working.

the 10ga wiring comes in to GP 1, and successively goes to 2,3 and terminates at 4...

this is without a relay in the system.... so if I add a relay, AND, install a GP voltage supply wire that connects to both #1 and #4, I will boost the voltage up to a full 12 volts, and supply that voltage to both ends of the circuit and evenly to all the glow plugs...

I DID check #4, which is the hardest to get at, I pulled it so i could get some dimensions, and to check it for continuity... It was good.

I will check the others and see what they tell me, but the addition of a GP relay is definitely on the list...

centerline, be careful there in terms of the length of time you engage the glow plugs. Maine Sail recently reported, IIRC, that extended glow plug times with full (12V) voltage can burn them out or overheat them 'cuz they are designed for heating with the lower voltage.

Even if you do install the glow plug solenoid, what you end up doing is reducing your engagement time from 30 seconds to ten to fifteen seconds. The battery voltage will still drop.

What you're doing is simply interrupting the long wire that goes to the cockpit panel by installing the relay at the engine so that the length of wire from the batteries to glow plugs is shorter and the small wiring to the switch is no longer carrying the current but is now being the "switch leg."

Here's how we did ours, including a wiring diagram:

It works great, has been since I put it in.

Good luck.

Thanks Stu.... I dont have time to look over the diagram at this moment, but I sure will later....

AND, I did wonder how the gp's are rated...whether they took into account the voltage drop on the line, or with the full rated voltage applied.
with full voltage I do realize the heat times will be shorter, but I think that if the engaged voltage is too low, it wont heat them enough to do much good, even if they are held engaged for an unreasonably long time....

i'll know more after I get a chance to test the other three GP's.... I suspect any that may be burnt out, will be the first ones in line getting the voltage...

after checking the other three GP's, I found one bad one, and there are three different brands in the motor.... probably three different voltages/heat times also....
the good news is I found an additional number on one of the glow plugs in my motor, KLG 103L. it crossed over and is currently available at an affordable price. $60 for a set of 4, delivered price.... I bought 2 sets.
Mfg... RTG Automotive. :D:D

cl, that's great news. Glad you found them. Now, gettin' my fingers out, 60 divided by four is like 30 divided by two...:) Sure beats the original estimate, and buying two sets means you will have to own your new boat for, oh, like a double lifetime since in the past fifteen years I've heard of about only six skippers needing to replace their glow plugs - good thing or you to have to look forward to. :)

I will replace all of mine with new ones of all the same type and glow times, and have many spares which may allow me to help someone else who has the same trouble that I have had...

worldly speaking, these things arent rare by any means, but here on the american continent the part numbers have all been obsoleted with no forwarding address... or why they even existed here.
To cross them over to the UK equivalent seems to be highly guarded, top secret, classified information that cant be done here on this side of the ocean. and that is what drives the american price so high on $15 glow plugs....
