I have the factory installed Onan, sitting above my Yanmar in the engine room. Problem is , the gen set is SO noisy!!!!!
apparently, the factory didn't fit a sound box as it simply didn't fit.
I am interested to know - has anyone made a sound enclosure or come up with any other method on minimizing the noise from the gen set?
I am planning to change the engine room sound proofing with new lead loaded foam, but boy, this will be a HUGE job!

What you need to understand us that insulation is meant to direct the sound, and in most cases that means downward towards the bilge.
On our 49 we are lucky, insofar that our genset is an enclosed Fischer panda mounted down in the bilge. Pretty optimal arrangement.
On the other hand, on the H50 CC, the genset sits above the engine; much like the arrangement you have now. It makes for a very noisy interior.
I would imagine your genset is similar.
If there is any way your could build a sound box just around the genset, that would be your quietest solution.
You will have to concern yourself with heat buildup inside the box. Our FB retains heat for a full day after shutdown. Be certain that the temperature rise is within specifications, and you don't start setting off over temp sensors

exhaust Fan

I saw new Hunters at boat show and Gen-X with a exhaust blower built in
to the gen to remove heat and I have a exhaust blower in my engine compartment that really helps take out the heat, just some added idea for you.

I had a custom enclosure made for my Northern Lights 5KW. It is made out of stainless tubing with vinyl covered lead lined material similar to that used by radiologists. It is attached to the stainless frame with velcro tabs around the frame. Access panels to get to oil dipstick, impeller, etc. were coordinated by me with the fabricator as were holes with slits and velcro closure to work around exhaust, electrical wires, fuel lines, etc. This was made around 2005 and I haven't been able to locate the company in several years, but he was located in southeast Florida. Some friends of mine found this source at the Miami boat show and gave me his name since the standard enclosure wouldn't fit. It cuts the sound 10-15 decibels and we have been very pleased. We just have a 65 decibel hum in the cockpit and less in the salon. I wanted to find him to build a similar one for my Yanmar. During motor cruising, we would like a similar reduction in the salon. If anybody knows of a similar company, I would like their contact information.
