Would most people just go with Catailina direct or look at some other brands of sails? i have a 30 foot 1982 Tall Rig and sail on a large inland lake.

Also does a 135 or 150 Genoa sound better. i am a casual racer.

I went to the sail warehouse and have been happy. Go with the 135 it will point better and stays off the spreaders.

Hi,
Which sail wearhouse Please a cost breakdown if possible? I'm planning to buy a set from Neil Pryde. Has anyone had experience with them? They are local but made overseas, China I believe. Cost is about $2100 less options for the main
Basic cruising main sail, full battenn 1 reef, cunningham, moderate roach, 7-8 oz. Dacron, for 1989 Catalina 34 based on IJPE of 44'/13.5'/38.5'/12'

Give Martin a call at somersetsails.com on the east coast. I purchased a mainsail for my cat.30 trbs from him which had radial clews, 2 reef points, and full battens for $1150 and the sail looks high quality. They are made in the U.S.A. at his loft and he has many years of experience in the business. He has an e-bay store also where you can see his work. Great guy to talk to about YOUR needs for YOUR boat.

Here's "The Deal" when anyone asks the basic question of "Where should I get my sails from?":

1. Website lofts are usually, but not always, less expensive.

2. Local lofts are usually, but not always, more expensive, but for a good reason: the sailmaker can come to your boat and measure and be there, literally, for you if you have questions or need adjustments (which NO online source is going to do for you).

3. It's ONLY LUCK when folks respond with good sail loft experiences, since not everyone reads this forum every day. So the recommendation for somerset sails might be available one day, but if you asked this same question last week or next week, a different skipper would answer with a different loft that he just had a good experience with. That's simple reality. You could do a search on this forum for "new sails" and find hundreds of posts. Really. Give it a try and see.

4. Catalina Yachts has their own in-house sailmaker, I believe it is Ullman, they do very good work, too, and know Catalinas.

Good luck. On this one, as far as a price YOU are willing to live with, you have to do your own homework, since there are dozens of different sailmakers out there. Google searches are your friend.

a big problem with low quality sails is the difference may not appear for some time and then you're stuck. find a local sailmaker

I was just trying to save people some time looking for new sails because I did the homework and came up with somersetsails as the best value, made in the U.S.A. sails for my boat. I had a good experience with Martin and thought I would pass it on.

and this keeps popping up. CATATALINA DIRECT IS NOT CATALINA. i found this out by buying inferior products from catalina direct and the complaining to catalina.

WADR, that simply wasn't my point, and there was no intention of knocking your suggestion, just a comment on the reality of the OP picking any one sail maker.

Of course the OP could call Martin, why not?

Thanks. Oh well, I went on an ordered from mariner sails in Dallas. This is where I live. My price for a main was about $1300 and a little over 2000 for the jib, 135%. I found one group that was very eager to make the sails for me but the Internet slammed them pretty hard. Thanks for your replies.

There's nothing wrong with going local, you'll have excellent customer service if you need it. Enjoy your new sails!

As a side note,

For anyone that may be interested, two years ago I ordered my 150 genny thru a local sail loft.

I ordered it mail order from Rolly Tasker. He's an Australian racer/sailmaker.
I was able to order specifics I wanted along with, high cut foot, sac strip, telltales & a view window. It took about 3 1/2 weeks & I picked it up from the sail loft. I believe you can order directly from them & save the middleman commission.

They did make me a nice sail.
