356 weaknesses

OK, I'm buying an 03 356, survey and sea trial is this Fri. I know nothing about sailing, but am pretty knowledgeable with boats, especially systems, HVAC, Diesel etc. But I have no experience with sailboats
All machines have weaknesses or at least some things are more problematic than others in any complex machine.
What should I be looking for in an 03 356? I'm buying the boat, this is not a Hunter bashing thing, what I don't want are any surprises and to be honest to make sure if there are any discrepancies they are fixed right.
I did try searching but haven't had any luck with that.
I'm really after a list of items that should be inspected, especially ones that may be peculiar to this particular model or this type / brand.
Thanks in andvance

There is a section on this forum under one of the other tabs which has numerous reviews of each model Hunter. All of their strengths and weaknesses are described therein including the 356.

We bought an 03 H356 3 years ago. Overall we are very pleased with the vessel. We found few negatives about the design when used for our purposes. We liveaboard for 4 to 6 months each winter with a small dog. We have a had another couple for a week staying on board with us and it worked well. The boat sails and handles very well.
The negatives or areas I would look at include, the propane locker is too small (it is easily enlarged for two 10 lb aluminum bottles), the metal pan under our air conditioner is almost rusted all the way through and will need to be replaced, it should have been a plastic pan. The AC is more than large enough for the size of boat.
We have not seen any evidence of a problem on our boat but some of the early 356's developed some stress cracks around the chain plates for the inner stays. Hunter has a kit to reinforce this area from the inside of the cabin, it is a about a day to install and will not be noticeable once installed.
I can't think of anything else that is a weakness or peculiar to this model. I would suggest if you have not hired a surveyor yet you consider hiring the legendary Steve Pettengill (slpettengill@comcast.net). Steve is intimately familiar with the design of this boat and it would be the best money you could spend on your boat purchase.

good luck, Bob

Good luck and you have picked one of the best crusing racing sailboats that Hunter has made and still going strong.
As said go to the section here in boat info and reviews and see what owners say and maybe a thru hull recall from Hunter but other than that no weakness unless
proper mantaince from previous owners so everything should be well checked.

Looks like a nice 356! After 11 years on our 356, the only thing beyond a condition survey I'd check on is the seacock recall that Hunter initiated - around 2005? they should have been replaced at Hunter's expense.
Great boat! we've been really happy

We bought our 03 356 in March of 03 and have put a lot of miles on it. The recall on the thru hulls I remember, but can't remember how to tell the difference. We've been primarily fresh water, so our HVAC pan is still ok. I've got stress cracks, fixed them once and they have returned. They are cosmetic and haven't caused any problems. The propane locker hasn't been an issue for us and we just refill when one of the small tanks is out. U-Haul's have propane and are pretty much everywhere.

We like the 03 kitchen layout with the Adler barber refrigerator/freezer better than the undercounter type now being used. Have much much more freezer space.

I have had some leaking of the windless as have a few others that I remember. I think mine is fixed, but we keep the Vberth full of stuff and I don't unbutton the wood very often to check it, so I may still have some small leak. Check it out.

I think Hunter hit a home run with this model. We have spent 869 nights aboard and have sailed/cruised over 6,000 NM. It handles very well in 4-6 foot seas. For the length boat, I have people with bigger boats comment on the interior volume compared to larger boats of other boat brands. It has the interior feel of a much larger boat.

We just haven't had much break, very small things like I have changed out 3 of the push button cabinet latches. I do have a couple of overhead lights that are out, but I could replace them- just haven't gotten around to it. Haven't really noticed that they don't work, but you should make sure they all work in the boat you are looking at.

We have changed the kitchen faucet to a single handle model and that is an improvement. We also changed the toilet lav faucet to single handle. We changed out the head from the Jabsco to an electric Raritan Sea-era and that was a good improvement, especially for guests as it is easier to explain how to use it. Before this cruise we are on now from Kentucky Lake to Punta Gorda, Florida, we added a SafeH2O water filtration system and it filters through two stages and UV light and we drink the water from our tanks with no worries. This system is just after the tank and before the manifold that distributes to all plumbing components, so we use the water just like at home.

The digital snake river tank gauges work for waste and water, but don't work for diesel fuel for me. There is a compatible replacement that you can find on the forum. I use the hour meters times flow rate but find it a little lacking in the area of knowing exactly how much fuel I have used.

We have a few of the red led diode lights out on the DC electric panel. Don't know how to fix those, but I bet someone on this forum does.

I'm having to dig hard to find things that have broken or that we have improved - all of these things are nickel and dlme items. I don't think there are any consequential flaws with this model boat.

I'll see if I can find the recall data - may be up on the boat! The Hunter website used to list the service data, but the new one doesn't seem to work right

Thanks guy's this kind of data is exactly what I'm after.
Does Hunter keep the data for the seacock recall by hull number? In other words do you think they have records of it being accomplished or not? I assume if they paid, they kept such records.

With regard to the thru-hull seacock question, I believe you can go by their color. Check me out on this but I think the new ones are blue. Hunter stopped doing warranty work since their bankruptcy filing a couple of years ago but they may have historical records as you suggest.

Owner and listing agent never heard of recall. My response is if they can't prove they were replaced, then they need to be replaced when the boat is pulled for survey.
Scott, thanks for the attached .pdf, it clears things up greatly
Guy's I appreciate the help greatly, you may have honestly saved my future boat.

We have had ours since 2002 and could not be happier with the boat--best model that Hunter ever built.

2 items: 1: The thru hulls were replaced because some were extremely hard to turn on and off. If yours turn relatively easily (no tools should ever be needed), then I would not worry about them after this many years.
2: There was a problem with some of the boats where the hull directly under the shower stall was weaker than it should have been and dished in a few inches when long time in the water. Hunter paid to beef up the hull from the inside and the problem was fixed with no visible impact on the flooring of the shower. When you haul out for the survey immediately go under where the shower is and see if the hull curves properly or is dished in at all. If it is, I would make a beef-up part of the contract of purchase.

Happy sailing.

Ivan is right about that problem with the area under the shower on some models. My boat neighbor had it on his and had it fixed. Mine has had no problem.

the seacocks in question had shafts made from the wrong steel and could break; you should replace them if it hasn't been done. Hunter notified all registered owners and you had to send in a form to do the recall. At the time, they did have a record of all HINs - now, who knows? If your HIN isn't on the list Scott posted you should be fine.
The shower reinforcement is a weird one - we don't have the problem, our sistership 2 HINs above ours does.

Any body know any specifics about the hull weakness? I gotta tell you, that sounds like a serious structural deficiency to me, a portion of the hull collapsing
