good year not to cover boat

i picked the perfect winter not to cover (not really by choice but other circumstances).

what kind of damage is possible with the continued snow/ice?

Relax. As I remember, those catalinas have cockpit scupper drains and hose. When the snowpocalypse is over you can take a soft tool to the boat and clear the snow out of the cockpit so that any freeze-thaw cycling doesn't down flood the interior. till then, hot chocolate and a Caribbean cruising guide.

ha, sounds good. just got back from a week vacation in florida. didn't get a chance to sail but still beats this.

Not covering a boat is likely he single worst thing you can do if you want to damage a boat.

That's why you keep you chainplates properly bedded and water tight. It isn't a cover issue, it is a dry-boat issue. Do you have a dry boat?

You'll probably suffer more than the boat will. Did you leave the boats in the water this year?

they're out of the water at least!

boat still in shelter for now but bought a small (very small) place in montauk in the fall. so planning to keep the 25 there

As long as the cockpit can drain and there is no ice in confined places, the boat can handle it. My boat is uncovered this year, too. Same thing happened last year.

Don't forget, it spends the half the year outside in the sun and rain when moored for the summer.

Snow isn't an issue. Water that turns to ice is. Brush her off. Bail out the cockpit and relax. You'll have 6" off ice in the cockpit come spring but won't hurt anything. And if you fittings are watertight, they are icetight. If you wnt to speed the thaw in the spring, mix a big bucket of salt water and pour it into the cockpit. Physics and chemistry will do the work.
