Is there a bottom paint that can be put over any bottom paint without causing a problem . When we bought our H23 it had vc17 so I always used that . I had heard or read that some paints can only be put over other certain paints . Not wanting to remove old remaining bottom paint . The boat willl spend summers in an inland lake and winters on a trailer . Thanks as always , Mike

Do you not want to continue using VC17? It can be applied over itself and though it is expensive, I think all of the other bottom paints are as well.

MM I just moved to FL from ND. I had VC-17 on the bottom while there. I did research and found that Pettite Hydrocoat SR can be applied over VC-17. However I still had her sanded to "rough up" the VC-17 before I had the Hydrocoat applied. It has been about 6 months and it is holding up very well.

But I can say that I (and all the other boaters that used it there) loved the VC-17 while in fresh water. It worked awesome and 90% of the boats there use it with no one complaining.

The problem is I do not know what is now on the bottom of the boat .I was told that if I put VC17 over some other paints it would cause the paint to flake off unless I totally removed the old bottom paint by sanding . I don't mind some sanding to rough up the surface but would hate to have to remove all the old bottom paint ,. VC 17 served me well for 15 years but not to the point that I want to remove all that old paint . I can use whatever would be the least amount of work for this year. I think thats a couple of recommendations for the Petit , Thanks as usual for all your replies , Mike

I also keep my H23 in fresh water. Other than the keel, I don't use any paint - only some slick grassy like stuff, not long, grows over the summer, and the yard power washes it off.

Do you have a barrier coat on the bottom ? Any problems with blistering . Does you boat stay in a slip or dry sail ? Mike

I don't have a barrier coat, and the boat stays in the water from about early to mid May through about mid Oct. I have not had any noticeable blistering.

if near a marine yard, ask those in your area as they would be in a better position to answer that question. Some paints are better for example in coastal waters vs. fresh and so on.
