Does anyone happen to know which mast manufacturer supplied the mast for the 1986 Hunter 34? I want to replace the halyard sheaves when I pull my mast in the spring, but I'm getting different responses from my queries - my local Hunter dealer says that the mast was a Z-Spar, but I can't find anything in their catalogues that even remotely looks like my mast. However the Rig-Rite site lists the Kenyon Spars 4873 Cruising mast having been used on Hunter 34s. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated

Steve, do you remember if the H31 also used the isomat mast and whether it had the integral spinnaker track?

What matters is the sheave, not the spar. Who knows where your spar manufacturer got the sheaves they put in your mast? When you lower the mast and remove the sheaves, look around for something that matches pretty closely and stop worrying about names.

Thanks, everyone for your input. In the end, PaulK is right. I was just hoping to have the correct replacement sheave in my hot little hand BEFORE I took the mast down. That way it would be a quick down, replace the sheave, then back up. By waiting until the mast is down, it may take some time to find the replacement.

I'm just going through this project on my Hunter 34, 1985 model. It is a Kenyon mast and Rigrite does sell the sheaves, but you probably only need to replace the bushings which they also sell. they come out easy. The one thing that I found is that the sheaves rub against the aluminum plate in the centre and the mast head as well when the halyard is torqued to the side a bit. I am going to install thin thrust washers to keep the sheaves more centred on the axle.

I talked with Eddie at Hunter. He said they used both the Isomat [silver] and the Kenyon. Based on that my 86 31 has the Isomat, hopefully with the integrated track.

There will be a identification plate on the front of the mast about 3 or 4 feet from the base if it is a Kenyon. Kenyon also has the removable sail slide track. Quite igneous for running wires in.

More information for you. The sheaves are 3 3/4 in diameter, 3/4 in thick, take a 1/2in axle and have an inside diameter of 3/4 in. without the bushing. Rig Rite has the bronze bushings for these and also sell stainless steel type as well.

Thanks, Heart of Gold, I'll have a buddy check for the identification plate, as I'm currently in Arizona. I'm going to order the bushings per your suggestion - which do you recommend - bronze or stainless?

Silicon Bronze as they tend to soak up lubricant then be "self lubricating" for quite some time
