Afternoon Folks.
We are headed back to the BVI's early June for 10 great days. Sunsail has a "Wi-Fi" package for onboard for getting email-browsing, ect. I am having difficultly understanding where the Wi-Fi signal will come from if we are anchored somewhere that is a little bit remote. I know if I go to the far end of my house my WiFi signal drops by 30%.

Has anyone used this service? Does it work well? Is it worth it?

Thanks. Bob

Yes it works, but IMO it is expensive… FWIW you get the signal from a cell tower. The boats have what amounts to a cell receiver/wifi router hidden on board. So the internet speed is 3g-ish at best (which is whole lot better than nothing). Also, although service has improved dramatically over the 20 or so years we have been going down there, there are patchy areas and intermittent (fairly short lived) outages… One thing to note: AT&T actually tried to charge me for "roaming" when my phone was connected via onboard WIFI. I screamed at them and got a (sort of) refund. But be aware and talk to your provider before you leave town!

Right. AT&T will ding you BIG TIME once outside the US. My son had this issue when he traveled to Canada from here. Not fun.

Anyway, you're on vacation. Why not take the opportunity to disconnect?

I was in the BVI in November and found that I had ATT service almost everywhere. I did call ATT before I left to "advise" them I was going to be there and they told me that there is a $10 package if I did roam. However I did turn off cellular data to be safe but saw the ATT "bars" most of the time (as far across as The Baths)
Hope this helps

Bob,

We'll be there June 1-9. If you see a frumpy guy with a stunning lithesome wife on a boat name Sapphire, say hello.

LOL.

To the OP, you are on vacation. Disconnect. I took my ipad and occasionally used "free" wifi at the bars; buy a pain-killer, check personal email, post some threads on the sailing forums to make everyone jealous!
