Insulating the engine.

I would like to soundproof the box that covers my diesel engine. It is just made of plywood and I only have at some places 1 inch of room to cover the box inside. We sometimes motor more than 2 hrs. to get some places
and just cut the noise in half would be so nice. And I guess the material has to be fireproof ! Any suggestion ?

Many people use foil covered foam board you get at Home Depot. Defender also sells material in a kit.

find your self an insulation supply company that supplies industrial work and get some armor flex 1/2 inch thick and use contact cement ...cut the parts to fit and then glue them on the box panels ...

Hi,
Just an idea, when searching for your material, look for sound proofing material if you want better result. This material is much more expensive than just the insulation material found at your local hardware store. Not for the same task.
Also, make sure not to cover the aeration holes required for the engine to operate properly.

Dynamat automotive sound insulation would do the trick but is pricey.

Yes,
Like I said, sound proofing material is way more expensive than the temperature isolation stuff.

I wonder if acoustical ceiling tiles could be used for this. They can sometimes be found at used building material centers like Habitat for Humanity outlets.

They would work for some sound deadening, but they have two drawbacks: they're not made to get wet and they are very light, so the weight required to keep sound from going through them isn't very good at all (the noise that may get ABOVE the ceiling doesn't matter, right?).

The Admiral brought home a spray can of fireproof foam insulation from her work. I plan on experimenting with it inside the engine box. I haven't used it yet but would imagine it would be similar to the "Great Stuff" foam only fire resistant. Home builders use it in the walls around heat sources. Not sure how it will stick to the walls but will find out. I plan on spraying it on thick and when dried, take a sheetrock saw and sculpt it to about an inch or 2 thick around the engine. I think it would be a good sound insulation plus a heat barrier....thats if it sticks :) I seen a similar item at Lowes too.

Just curious, you state that you have a C 22. I didn't know that they made a C 22 with an inboard engine. Is your engine an outboard in a well at the stern?

Sorry, I also have a H30 for a backyard project boat. My C22 just has an outboard.
