Dress code for Sunbrella colors?

There are some really interesting new pattern and color choices for a new sail cover and bimini cover, etc.

My question is, are these new patterns out of place on an older boat and best left to late model or euro boats? Are pastels the big seller now ? When is a color ''dated''? My wife calls capri blue, the 80's look, spruce, the 90's and Ivy green, pool table worthy...red, out of place on our model, etc

Colors always seem like the hardest decision, whether it is a car, house or boat.

Hay it's your boat. Express your self as YOU wish. You can look like every one else, or you can be your self....Mine? Previous owner bought it. When it wares out I'll look at something new.

I'm a pacific blue kinda guy, although many colors would look great with the appropriate boat.

When I see old interior shots of 70's boat with the plaid and twill cushions, I chuckle and it brings a warm feeling to my heart...

Just Andy Warhol your boat. Who cares about what is in fashion now or was in fashion years ago.

But to answer the question, I do not think colors are dated as much as they are standard. Sunbrella fabric is used everywhere so I am sure you wife is correct when on a patio, but not so much on a boat.

I am going with Sunflower Yellow when I order my bimini. Everybody and their brother has the blue color now. Not only that but my boat already has a yellow main, head and pedestal cover. :) Plus I like the lighter color of yellow and may hide the bird chit better. Yellow is not even offered anymore it seems. Need to special order it.

Nothing wrong with going with the traditional colors. Not all of the colors lst s long as others. High quality thread can also extend the life of the product.

You may want to research this before you decide.

i must ask this....if one must ask about popularity of color scheme, how does one become ready to cruise.
this is not a popularity contest but self expression. be real and do your own thing.

You can entertain everyone who sees it...

Let's see? Squamish is not as hot as say Florida or even the California Delta in the summer. Our friends sailed from Vancouver to Mexico a few years ago with black sunbrella. One of the things in their summery report is: hot weather biminis and dodgers should be a light color.

This green color she likes

This blue I like. She offered to sew the folding bimini cover and mainsl cover. Stalemate.

Stu is correct, no worry with dark color up here, just the 5 ft of wet coast rain...

We'll in that case just laminate the two colors. Green inside blue outside and ya both win

Just wondering how much of a heat difference there would be under the cover between a light and a dark colored sail cover. Excess heat can't be good for sail life.

Re: Dress Code for Sunbrella Colors ?

Most popular colors well, and this list hasn't changed in 15 years:

Navy Blue
Pacific Blue
Captain Navy

Next tier: Forrest Green, Black, Cadet Gray, Royal Blue

There doesn't seem to be any changing color trends.

....This blue....

.... I like...
Is that Ocean Blue?

http://www.sailrite.com/Sunbrella-6079-0000-Ocean-Blue-60#.UtMs3PuLWSo

We've done almost everything in that...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor-canvas/canvas-index.html

.... and like it as it is a little darker than the Pacific Blue that is so popular.

We did worry about the heat with the Endeavour so we....

... two-toned it with the lighter blue on top and it works well in Florida, but as others have said do what you like you are the one that is going to look at it more than anyone else,

Re: Dress Code for Sunbrella Colors ?

Hey Sum..... the Endeavor looks like Pacific Blue... that's what I have. http://www.sailrite.com/Sunbrella-6001-0000-Pacific-Blue-60#.UtM0ocKA1WA

The Mac looks darker... but it may be the lighting.

Changing colors on your canvas is a major decision and a substantial cost.... because most canvas colors coordinate with the boat's factory color scheme. In my Cat 27, for instance, all the non-skid area is a powder/sky blue... so just about any shade of blue works, but reds, greens, yellows, etc.... look nerdy.

That said, I don't have a dodger or bimini....the major canvas is the mainsail cover and he hatch cover, so for under $500 I could get something cool, but then I'd want to repaint the non-skid with kiwi grip and change the boot stripe etc.... So.. since it's unlikely that I'd have the time an resources to change out everything at once.... I'd choose to stay with the same color scheme.... and direct my attention to keeping it well maintained rather than trying to make a fashion statement....
