Google Glass Lens Inserts

While the below post does not sound like it is boating related, imagine if you are running a navigation app on your phone or have all your instruments streaming data via bluetooth or wifi and you can see it on google glass. You can throw away your chartplotter and most of your instruments.

If it runs on electrons, it will fail at some time ..... that time is often, the worst possible time for such a failure. From personal experience, I keep backup compass, gps and paper charts handy for all waters that I enter.

Really! Sounds like a distraction to the view. I'm positive I'd rather look at the first mate than a chart all the time. It is not like you are going 50 MPH and have lots of things going on like when you drive a car. Even at 6 knots you are going to be on a chart for several hours.

Why is it that every time something new and shiny comes along the thought is to throw away the old. Really? Throw away your charts, chart plotter, and all of your instruments? Like others have said..... have they been tested in a marine environment? And how many pairs of sunglasses are at the bottom? Let alone phones, hand helds, etc..

Our propensity, nay, our moral obligation to consume is required by our economy.

Just keep your charting stuff in a drawer, at the ready!

I'd tend to agree with justsomeguy with the caveat "when it makes sense, is cost effective, and I can afford it".

I HAVE to maintain the paper charts (or spend thousands to get a certified system), so I'm thinking it is not cost effective. Electronics and navigation have a sorted history. Most will concur that anything electronic is not something you want to "stake your life on" so it does not make sense as a (dumb) sole source of nav info. And if I spend the monies on the admiral........ I'm thinking I'm a happier sailor when the admiral is happy so I probably can afford is but there are other things that result in better "investments."
