Hunter 33 2005, Thru - haul backing

Do all Hunter 33 come with round plywood backing. I noticed the area where all the thru- hauls are and all have the round plywood. When this area gets wet you have moisture breaking down the plywood. These are thru-haul fittings.

Has anyone modified this area. Is there any marine caulk, liquid steel, epoxy kits etc. that would make it better. Thanks.

They are called thru-hulls and yes, many people choose to replace the wood with a variety of materials to better cope with moisture. Among the alternatives are epoxy-protected marine ply, starboard or other synthetic materials, all of which need to be shaped to the curvature of the hull to preclude deformation when tightened.

The other more important question here is why your hull is so wet and what you should do to eliminate the cause rather than just address a symptom.

Where would the water come from? Mine have never been wet enough to damage the plywood. We've had ours for 7 seasons and the plywood still looks new.
Only water mine sees is when I remove and clean the engine intake filter, but that gets mopped up right away.

I agree Scott, there should not be any water getting into that area.

My Hunter 30 has square pieces of plywood behind each thru hull. Mine needed replacing too. When I removed the old bronze fitting there was little if any sealant left on it.....that's where your water is coming from. In my case the plywood and fitting nut was doing most of the sealing.

Using plywood backing plates for thru hulls has been a common practice for years.

Like Woody mentions you can follow the advice of MainSail when it comes time to replace them.

Everyone mostly correct here. Might just add FYI that the REASON for the plywood is that one face of it can be shaped to fit the curvature of the hull and the other side remains flat to match the face of the inside flange of the through-hull fitting.

Thanks Woody, I just purchased the boat so I can only guess where the water is coming from. The 2 strainers were not that tight so maybe that was the problem. How do I get to the modifications you mentioned ? Thanks, and smooth sailing !

You should find out where the water is coming from. Maybe try drying that area and then watch for water trickling in.

Did the survey not identify this problem?
