The danger of this seems to be if the through hull fitting started turning when you tried to remove the old one or install the new one. That would likely create a leak requiring a haul out. Might need a pipe wrench or locking pliers on the exposed through hull threads for anti-rotation.
Good suggestion Jibes. Don't want to see a bad situation worse. I didn't read anywhere on their website about this being used for routine change outs. Standard dangers apply about using either a skilled dive service to do the change out or wait for haul out.
I think it's primarily intended as an emergency tool, no?
It is pretty cool, but I would think if one was thinking of using it in an emergency, the boat shouldn't be moving or it might lose the seal.
From my experience, it would take a brave soul to remove a valve with this tool, or any other. I can't recall ever removing a valve that didn't require someone on the outside with a proper thru hull tool to hold it, or turn it while someone held the valve.
Strikes me as a Ronco $9.95 tool that if you call within the next ten minutes, they'll send you TWO worthless thingys to clutter up the boat;
when a wooden plug will work as well..
