hunter hunter 31 magog
Bought a brand new Hunter 31 2012. Want to change the jib for a bigger sail. Cannot get a genoa because of the sailboat configuration. Anyone has experienced an asymmetrical sail for this boat ? Is it good ? Any suggestions ?

... Cannot get a genoa because of the sailboat configuration....
Yeah, I bet you can. My boat was set up for a self-tacking jib (see the avitar on the left) and many owners added genoas. While I like A-sails and chutes fine, they won't help you upwind.

I did add a third track and I do have to switch sheets up wind, but it works. While it took a bit of fine-tuning, now the boat has a whole 'nuther gear upwind; 8-9 knots to the weather :), not bad for 34 LOA.

I also have an asymmetrical chute.

Racing, or cruising?

Forget a big genny for cruising - go for an asymmetric, since you are seldom hard on the wind while cruising, and once you are 70 degrees off the true wind, the Asynetric is the better sail.

If racing, I would get to know the fleet over a few races, get advice, then buy. A lot depends on local conditions and fleet rules when racing. A big genny is for getting to the mark fast in light air. To carry one as the wind pipes up takes substantial rail meat. Do you have such a crew?
