How do I shut down this diesel

We just purchased a 1978 Oday 32 ketch with a Westerbeke 30 auxiliary. Today we spent several hours getting the sails, bimini. dodger etc. back in place in preparation for the maiden voyage to her new slip in Ft. Myers. The previous owner has recently passed and his spouse has limited knowledge of the boat. The diesel has no ignition switch and all I find is a glow plug switch and a start button. I have not fired the diesel and am wondering how to shut the auxiliary down at it's destination. I see no switch but I'm certain I'm missing something. Please help!!

I'm new to diesels also, but on my '87 272, there is a 'kill' T handle. Pull that out and engine should die. Must be in 'In' position to start engine.

I have a Westerbeke Ten-2, so your setup may be different.

To start, if yours is like mine, there is also a key that must be turned to 'On' position, but it is not a key-switch (doesn't turn over the starter). Have to hold in glow plug button, then hit Start button.

And turning key OFF won't stop the engine, either...

A note of caution here if you do start the engine and for whatever reason it won't shut down ........ don't turn off the ignition switch in a panic. This will likely damage the diodes in your alternator.

What you can do to stop the engine is to stop the air supply to the engine. Do this by placing some object over the air filter air inlet. Maybe have this object on hand before starting the engine. Whatever you do, DON'T stick your hand over the air inlet as you'll get a hickey which you'll NEVER be able to explain . Or worse yet, a rupture of the skin.

Don't forget to open the raw water intake valve. I generally hold the glow plug button for 30-40 seconds on a cold start. Advance the throttle slightly and hit the start button after that. Do a quick check to make sure it is pumping water. Shut down is as mentioned above. Usually a "T" handle or round pull knob attached to the cable that kills the fuel flow.

................. I never said that. That was the third glass of wine after dinner talking last night. Cheap bloody !%$^&# Beaujolais :cussing:.

Shutting off your ignition while the engine is running will only disable your high temperature water and low pressure oil alarms.

Disconnecting you battery (while the engine is running) via the selector switch is what will destroy your alternator diodes.

It's ok

We found the kill switch. It's in the strangest place inside the cockpit, and was covered with a cut up tennis ball. lol Now we can shut off the engine properly. Whew!!!
