It's not often that I am satisfied enough with a boating product to actually post a review of it. For that to happen it generally has to exceed my expectations for both performance and value. The DAX OneTouch Winch handles have done this.

While racing with Tim R. earlier this season he had a pair on board that he discovered over the winter. The first time I used them I was hooked. What really sold me was when I reached behind my back, blindly, while at the same time still trimming the main sail and simply passed it to our buddy Chris.. It was so easy to remove, without even looking away from what I was doing, that I had to have them on my boat too. Until you use them you'll probably have a hard time imagining how useful they really are. Once you do use them......... look out.... you'll be busting out the credit card in no time!:)

The DAX winch handle is sold here by Phil & SBO DAX OneTouch (LINK). They are marketed and produced by Don Steiner a sailor who actually invented the technology then licensed it to Lewmar.
Don smartly retained the manufacturing rights to all "composite" winch handles and licensed Lewmar the production of metal ones. From what I understand Lewmar is now pushing the envelope of their agreement and kind of flexing their "big dog" muscles against the little guy. I like buying from the underdog / little guys when possible after all Lewmar would never have this technology if it were not for a little guy..

I own LOTS of winch handles after many years of boating. Have you seen my anchor collection? ;) I stopped using the heavy metal ones that can put a hole in your boat, or break a foot, a long, long time ago. For the last ten plus years have been using the plastic Titan handles. While not a particularly great product they don't chip my gelcoat when dropped or leave my decks with spider crazing like the heavy metal Lewmar, Barrient or Harken handles do. They work, but are so so on the performance level, and expensive for what you get.

The DAX handles take the light weight winch handle to a new level with simple one handed operation. Simply grip the handle anywhere along the gray colored spring loaded lever and this will unlock the winch handle so it can be lifted & removed. These handles also have palm grips and ball bearings in the handles for easy spinning.

For those looking for non toe busting, locking, lightweight ball bearing winch handles with a palm grip, and at a reasonable price, you can't beat the DAX OneTouch!

These handles have sooo many pros and only cons I have are: 1) The bearings in the handles can be prone to buzzing/rattling when the motor is running. 2) I really don't like the aesthetics of the neon hunter orange palm grips. I will admit that color to be very useful when looking for a handle during a race, they DO stand out, but it is just kind of fugly..;)

All in all these are great winch handles that I wish were invented a looong time ago.

The DAX OneTouch Winch Handle:

Simple Grab & Go Convenience:

Locking Pins In Locked Mode (handle released):

Handle Compressed Pins Retracted For Removal From Winch:

Bearings In Winch Handle:

The Gray Spring Loaded Compression Lever:

P.S. These handles drop ship from the North East, and for me, shipped the same day I ordered them from SailboatOwners.com. I had them on my door step the next day at ground shipping rates. I had great service from both SailboatOwners..com and DAX!

How would you, or anyone else, compare this to the Lewmar version described below? Specifically, I am lwondering if the DAX would be a worthwhile replacement.

"Lewmar Lite-Touch Winch Handles

The Lite Touch was developed using the latest winch handle technology providing an easy to use, lightweight yet affordable winch handle that floats.

Constructed from strong composite material for extreme rigidity, the Lite Touch features a push button locking mechanism and PowerGrip handle. The Lite Touch uses a universal bi-square designed to fit all current manufacturers' winches.

Its plunger operated locking mechanism is easily identifiable and accessible, which means no more fumbling to insert or release the handle. Just a push of the yellow button locks or releases the handle.

Lewmar's PowerGrip handle offers an easy one or two-handed operation and its bright yellow cap also makes it easily identifiable. This composite winch handle will not damage the deck if dropped and will float should it be accidentally washed overboard.

The Lite Touch is available in a 10" (250mm) standard handle length for maximum power ratio in all winches."

Don..

The big difference is that the Lewmar Lite-Touch locking button is that small yellow button. I feel this to be only marginally better than the old thumb twist locking knobs. Both are plastic composite but only one has the the DAX OneTouch feature.

The DAX OneTouch release mechanism is the length of the entire handle and significantly wider than the Lewmar One-Touch (not the Lite-Touch) which makes it easier to compress and remove. Grab and squeeze anywhere along the gray colored DAX OneTouch lever and it unlocks. The DAX also seems to have a higher arch to their OneTouch lever which should make for easier one handed operation too. Lewmar can't legally make a copy of the DAX OneTouch feature in plastic, due to licensing, though they are trying to push the limits from what I understand...

The comparable Lewmar One-Touch runs about $98.00 and the DAX OneTouch is about $94.00. I like the OneTouch compression handle of the DAX better than I do the Lewmar. Either the Lewmar One-Touch or the DAX OneTouch are great handles but I don't particularly see as much "upgrade" from the older thumb lock technology in the Lewmar Lite-Touch especially when compared to the DAX OneTouch or the Lewmar One-Touch..

Hope that all made sense..?

Thanks for the opinion. I can see there is a clear advantage but not sure it's worth the extra cost to me personally at this point - I picked up the Lewmars for around $60 each compared with the DAX $$$. Would have chosen the Dax had I known at the time...

I have been using the original Lewmar metal version for a few years now. I had gotten tired of the hassles with the old thumb twist handles so when these showed up I bought a pair. I love the things. The only time I was sorry was when I saw Don Steiner selling his composite handles at Annapolis. Composite is nicer.

The bearings only make noise when left in the winch(verical position). I also thought I did not like the orange until I saw how easy they are to find. If you like customized winch handles, you can get an engraved plate for the top of the handle.

Another con though is that they do not float. Hopefully Don will address this with the next generation.

Good info also on his website http://www.onetouchhandle.com

My crew all love them. Especially the admiral.:D

MS, you should have taken the photo showing you releasing the handle one handed while 180° from you.

Winch Handles

While we are on the subject, a couple of years ago, I got tired of my crew tearing up the gel coat with my Lewmar SS locking winch handles of which I have three. I bought two locking plastic ones from an outfit in Canada. I'm sure they are Chinese-sourced. I think I paid $25-30 each on a two-package deal. Anyhow, they came and like many such things, had blanks where the brand would appear, so they are obviously made for different distributors under private labels. Anyhow, I didn't like the locking mechanism, so I broke them off, and my crew LOVES these things (as do I) and, no more gel coat chips! In fact, I am going to buy a third to replace the last SS one. The others are ballast below since I was sceptical that these would last, but they are doing fine. However, they don't work as well to break up ice cubes....FWIW...

PS edit: my apologies to the SBO folks. I see they have a floating plastic winch handle for $33 that looks oh-so-much like mine. As I said, I don't like locking handles, so I took a pipe wrench and broke off the locking mechanism and, as I said, love 'em. But, buy them here!

What's with the locking handles??? It was soooo much easier before they started making that [costlier] nonsense.

I bought a DAX handle from Don when he had a booth at the Annapolis boat show a couple of years ago - looked for him last year to buy another, but couldn't find him or his handles. Great to know that SBO now sells them - they're a great product. Only squawks are that they sink, and they don't fit in my Lewmar winch handle holders (intentional?).

`

i have a new DAX winch handel but it doesn't fit in my Edson pedestal mounted winch handle holder-the flexible white kind. Anyone know which brand will accomodate the DAX handle?
the current handle holder has a concave mount that hugs the pedestal very nicely and is atttached with two plastic ties.

I always liked the small plastic winch handle holders that look like the socket of a winch. :)

Looks as if there's a model w/out the large, orange, bulbous head. I like it. But I have other things to spend $80 or $90 on…

I have to agree with Anchor Down. The DAX handle looks great and if I were in the market for handles I would almost certainly buy them. But given the price I will wait till I really need them.

Dax OneTouch winch handle holders ? We've Got Um !!

Have to admit, when we were developing the Dax OneTouch our focus was on form and function. We didn't pay any attention to winch handle pockets.

Since introducing Dax handles to the market (June 2007) we've had numerous inquiries about which pockets accommodate our handles. It's been on our 'to do' list. It's now done.

We now have holders made from 'StarBoard', a material developed specifically for the marine environment. These winch handle holders will either snap onto you helm pedestal / stanchion tubing, or can be flat-mounted on a bulkhead, cockpit side, etc. They're beautifully done.

We have stock available now. The price is $25 which is very competitive compared to other holders out there in the market. I'll put a few pictures up as soon as my photographer gets off his butt and does them.

If interested in purchasing one they should be up on this site shortly.

Best regards to all,
Don Steiner

Floating Models??

Have no idea how old this thread was, but I was looking at them. Christmas is coming and the Admiral asked me for a list. Would really like to have floaters, but I do like the bulb handle as in heavier winds the crew needs all the help they can get. Maine Sails description of the one handed feature makes them sound sweet.

I have two Dax handles, one with the knob handle and one without (works better on the halyard winches under the dodger). Love them. Bought the first one at the boat show in Annapolis right after they came out, from a guy (assume he was the company owner) selling them out of a box outside the tents. After 6 seasons on one and 5 on the other, they're holding up well.
