'Cut the lead keel off the parts boat today and loaded it onto a dump trailer to take to the landfill. One backyard eyesore almost gone.

That's a crummy old boat, and it fate is fair. But its still hard to watch. Sailboats were made with a pact with man. The boat protects man from the sea, man protects the boat from the land. Ashes to ashes for sure, but it always feels like we let the boat down on our end of the bargain.
I prefer to think that the boat knowingly and willingly let me help with euthanasia, while donating her parts so that another boat might yet live. She was too far gone, even in the hands of the previous owner. Years of neglect, open and partially disassembled, full of water, treated with total disrespect. The only life left was in those parts, and they are cleaned up and are taken care of now.

Scrap lead sells for around $1.00/pound - I would look around for a scrap dealer - I suspect you have 700-800 lbs there
Around here it goes for .35 a lb at the recycler. I had 2400 lbs. sold for 840. More than I paid for the boat so I am good with it
looks like pulpit and stanchions still good was that a mid boom traveler over the hatch and who knows what else may have been wasted for a quick buck. sad
Stanchions were already bent by previous owner. The arched traveller tray was missing its track.
I was torn too but know there was nothing left on the boat worth salvaging.
I had already offered it here free to good home with no takers. No mast, no boom, no motor. It was really done
I should stop short of arguing, but at some level I feel I might be being attacked? Maybe I am wrong... Tone is lost so I acknowledge I may just be Mis-reading it.
Still, (just in case) the whole boat was advertised at SBO as free to anyone who wanted it. Locally on Craigslist it was advertised for parts salvage. I have been trying to make the good parts find a good home for three years. THREE YEARS. You see the results of three years of effort.
Some folks have come and gotten some parts. I have taken a few. I can clearly cite 4 different boat owners who have benefitted from donor parts off this boat.
Did I mention the wasps?
There are /were still some usable parts but multiple offers all have expired. I am not going to spend any more time cutting on the girl. My time is worth more than the reward at this point.
What is left of the boat is located south of Stillwater Oklahoma. If you guys want to come cut parts off come on. You take all you want! Know that my schedule says she hits the big landfill under the sky this Thursday.
Something tells me though that the detractors will recede and hide behind their keyboards and the only sound the old girl will hear is the icy cold scream of the Northern Oklahoma Winter drawing near. That until I fire up the 2-ton cab and chassis and haul her to her final resting place.
Hey at least she won't be alone. There are several Mercruiser test boats at the same landfill.

you are one lucky puppy...here if i had to do that the county enforcement Gestapo would require that it be sectioned up and sized to a required dimension before excepting it and also charge a fee to do so......

hello all
I too recently decommissioned my 1st sailboat... it was the hardest thing I ever did... an 86 MacGregor 25... it was demasted and cracked the deck, poptop, and slider top, and broke the mast into 2 parts.... it also separated the mast step from the deck too... too much damage for me to fix on my limited budget... so I too stripped her down to nothing but the hull and deck... I still have a few items from it left, that I do not need...
I gave her to a buddy I work with....he plans to paint her black, and build her into a pirate ship treehouse for his son... he is going to build a cradle to hold her about 10 ft of the ground, and attach rope ladders to her to get in/out of the treehouse... I will take pictures and post here later when he has it finished...

LOL I'm agreeing with you. There are WAY too many old crappy sailboats in this world. Most should be crushed. This one for sure. Sell what you can and get rid of the rest.
If I had any constructive point to add, it would be to let the boats die with some dignity. They were loved once, and they held up their end of the bargain. No need for pictures of her without her keel. Kind of like a old worm American flag. You're supposed dispose of it, and burning is OK, but no pictures please.
Several years ago, a young, brash owner of a Beneteau First 235 scrapped the boat after it sustained some damage. He posted the video of the boat being crushed by and end-loader. You COULD NOT IMAGE the backlash on the first235.com site... They almost kicked him out. Had he just done it and reported, people would have been more OK.

Even though I've been a sailboat owner for over 25 years, had I read all these posting with the tears, anger and lamenting about 13 months ago I would have thought you were all crazy. I have always lived by the mantra of "never marry an asset". Well, in Superstorm Sandy our house was severely damaged and we felt really bad. However, when we went to see the damage to our boat a week or two later, we both cried. Now its much easier to understand the feelings that people have not only towards their own boats but to other's also. Like vintage classic cars, these boats are not owned by us, but only entrusted to us while we have them, to watch over them for the next caretaker. Seems like you well fulfilled your responsibility.
