I am the new owner of a 1964 O'day Mariner 19. The question is...
Do the side/back stays need to be disconnected when raising/lowering the mast or just loosened? Thanks.

I own one also, hull #16, I leave the side and aft shrouds conected all the time. The side ones help keep the mast straight and the aft one keeps you from going too far when raising. Are you a member of the Mariner Clas Assn? There are a lot of info on doing just that and more, way more. The MCA is specific to the Mariner.Check it out.
