Size of Shaft Packing

Is there a way to determine what size packing I will need before I remove the stuffing box?
I want to buy it before I start the job, and not sure if there is a rule for the size of packing according to the shaft and stuffing box nut. My shaft is 7/8. I checked Maine Sail's how-to article but there is no mention of how to get at the right size.

I believe the packing is in bulk lengths. Cut to fit when inserting. Also remember to stagger the joint positions.

if you know the dia of the shaft and the inside dia of the stuffing box nut you can figure it out from there ......example....1 inch shaft dia....1 1/2 nut dia.....

1 1/2 inch nut inside dia minus 1 inch shaft dia = 1/2 inch divided by 2 = 1/4 packing.....

Yes, but that will be a two step process. I am trying to find out the diameter before I start, so that I can finish on the same day.

The safest thing to do is get some 3/16", 1/4" & 5/16" packing before you start.
Use the largest packing that fits in there easily.
Any packing that needs to be forced into the stuffing box is too thick.
Return what you don't use.
