I recently bought this boat. I just noticed it doesn't lend itself to running and wing on wing looks pretty much impossible. That main pushes up against the stay well before the boom is perpendicular to the boat. Is that just the way it is?

Pretty much, the Benny's have the shrouds swept back. I have a new Oceanis 41 and she didn't sail down wind very well. So I rigged a preventer and got a whisker pole and it made a dramatic improvement. Adapt and overcome. Even then the main is prone to chafe even with the vang tight as possible. Good sailing.
+1 on the whisker pole for ddw. It actually will sail faster downwind if the wind is about 160 on the pole side.
Else about 110.
One problem if ou put a ring for the pole on the mast your jib sheets will hang up on it when upwind.
