Last night while surfing the net and looking for stuff I do not need, I noticed that both of the USNA's 44's are listed on the GSA surplus website. Bidding ends on Nov 2, 2013...

Great boats!!!!

You may have to go to the section "Boats & Marine Equipment" and you can not miss them. Bidding at the time of this post $20K and $12K.

Interesting site.
My Power Squadron instructor used to buy his boat US gov "surplus." I guess he got some good deals. He would then re finish them for his own use.

These are the very old TP Navy 44's. They were replaced by the new Morris Yachts Navy 44. Morris is making a civilian model of the Navy 44 called the Leadership44. I like!

Wonder why the winches were removed? looks like a whole set of sails sitting in the cabin.

The Morris boat is the USCG trainer. It's fractionally rigged. The new Navy boat is a masthead boat from Pearson Composites, just like the gen1

Yes thanks, that Leadership 44 has me spellbound. Morris, fast, easy maintenance.

If your not interested in a boat they are also auctioning off a lighthouse. Did a search by location for Massachusetts. Lighthouse is in New Bedford.

Does anybody know why these were not sent back to Pearson for a full on refit or possibly even contracted elsewhere for refit?

Maybe the sequester?

Also, I couldn't divine the reserve price they're asking. Anyone know?

Hmmmm.. 12 winches at an average price of $1800 each is $21,600.. for starters.. That probably could be cut down to 4 winches with some re-rigging but that isn't cheap either. No MSD.. interior is pretty much wall-to-wall bunks.. I wouldn't think that the boat would be worth much more than $12K or so..

Fine Print

Only problem is if you read the fine print, the USN will remove all Weapons, Weapon Mounts, Sirens, Flashing Lights. So really, what fun would it really be?

Several have been sold in the 5 years they have been offered. The full set of winches will cost a flat $10k extra, which is a good deal. The boats were made by TPI, which is not the same company as the current Pearson Composites.

The boat was designed to give as many crew jobs as possible. As such, it is a masthead rigged winch farm. Happy cruising for you and 10 of your closest friends!

Let's see, the Navy likes to load up with redundant crew so 30 or so should be about right. With that much manpower who needs winches.
