Our bow pulpit is looking rather dull. Would like to bring back a higher gloss. What are the best methods?
I'm sure there is some spray on wipe off miracle stuff that sells for a $1 / gallon that will create a mirror finish. :)

If its real bad use rubbing compound back and forth, not circular, and use polish as all ready suggested. Chief

We're using some of these polishes as well as spotlessstainless.
I'm not seeing any appreciable change in the finish.
I suspect there is more to creating a mirror finish on stainless.

We'll give rubbing compound a try

I only wish.

I have had good luck using Collinite #850 as a maintenance wax but when it goes beyond this I bring in Autosol. Regardless of the product some elbow grease will be needed to restore your pulpit to a mirror finish.

If you're after a mirror finish, about the only way is to buff it with a cotton wheel, first with tripoli compound, then if you want it brighter then use red rouge. There is no quick and easy way to a mirror finish.

And never ever use steel wool, or anything else that will leave behind bits of metal

And then the white compound for that final silvery mirror. You can buy the compounds at Home Depot in the tool crib. They are sold under the Ryobi name in cardboard tubes (polishing compound). They look like big crayons. For stainless I start with the black to remove scratches then finish with the white compound. I am restoring a '69 Mustang and have been polishing every bit of stainless forever. The advantage I have is to take the metal parts to the buffer. Have to figure out how to put the cotton buff wheels (Harbor Freight) on a right angle buffer for the boat.

Many OEM stainless rails originally had a "brushed" finish, and were not polished. When new, the brushed finish reflects light to give a polished look with out the expense of polishing.
If this is the case with yours, you are probably really wasting you time trying to achieve a "polished" look.
To get to "polished" all traces of the brushed finish would need to be sanded out, [as they are actually scratches in the metal], with finer and finer grit, then polished with cotton buffs with finer and finer rouge, specificly for stanless.
It can be a very involved process.
I built a stern rail for my boat with a bracket for a solar panel using polished tubing. To polish the welded areas, I used an air powered right angle die grinder, with 3 stages of sanding pads, then a hard cotton buff, with 3 different grits of stainless rouge, then a soft buff, with the finest stainless rouge. It was quite a time consuming process.

If your rails are originally polished, you can bring them back much easier, starting out with the soft buff, and the finest rouge.
"McMaster-Carr" sells 1/4" buff holders and 2" buffs which "might" work on a drill, but the higher speed of a die grinder will work much better.
All that being said, you need to first determine if your's were orig. polished or brushed.

Miracle Cloth works well. The compound and cotton wheel is the only thing that will really make it shine.
