whats in a name

hello all

I am in a delima here... a name given to a boat reflects the boat and the owner together... can the same name be given to 2 different boats without the II or 2 added after it ? the 1st boat was named but the launching ceremony was never given... I was waiting for my wife to get here so she could perform the launching, after all she named the boat...

what I am asking is, if the launching ceremony was not performed, then is it truly the name of the boat ?.... and can the name be transferred to the new boat purchased, instead of coming up with a new name ?... my wife will be arriving from china and she wants the same name for the new boat... I am not sure about naming protocol or superstition concerning this ... I am seeking advice on this ?

I think you can do whatever you want, but I think it's cooler to do something that's a little on traditional side. We did a denaming/naming ceremony for our boat but we were never really sure that there was a previous name, only that the previous owner vaguely referred to it. So, we had a party and jotted down a ceremony (based on a few I found on the internet, with some personal stuff). It's attached if you want to adapt it.

I figure the name is whatever is on the boat. In 2 years time nobody will care how it got there.

I just scrubbed off the old name and put a new name on. I looked at the naming ceremony stuff and just figured it would be too embarrassing to actually go thru with it. I think Sue would have probably hooked-up with a power boater if I even suggested she participate.

I was at a party Saturday night discussing boats wwith a couple I had just met. I stated that a man can buy any boat he wants as long as he names it after his wife. The reply from the husband was I am not going to name my boat "Sissy"!

Cover all bases and go with tradition!

Go through a de-naming ceremony and a naming ceremony. Google will be useful here. Get your friends to assist you; make a good party of it.
You can be as elaborate as you wish or as quick and simple as you want.
I happen to have a good set of friends who are always looking for a party and hams enough to want to act out a little bit.

If the boat is documented, I'd modify the documentation showing the change.

Good one, Jim!

I find more power boaters name their boats after women in their lives, be it girlfriends, SO's or grandmothers, than it seems do sail boaters. I have noted, though, that altogether too many newer AWBs have cutesier names than they used to. I find it appalling, and IMHO think that folks with cutesy boat names (Ginnie Marie Kathy, etc.) should be forced to buy powerboats. :eek: I'd rather see tired (and I do mean tired, not tried) but true boat names on boats.

hello all

thank you all for your information... I found a site that explained the boat denaming and naming ceremony... I will use the denaming ceremony to purge the name from my old boat... my wife wants to use the same name for the new boat...

the new boat does not have a name on it, and the owner I bought it from didn't name it, and he doesn't know if the owner before him had ever named it... so I am assuming this boat has never been named... my wife and I will perform the naming ceremony in the spring for our 1st sail together...

hummmmmm have to disagree with you on that one Stu.....i elected to name mine in honor of me dear departed mum.....if you had know here you would understand why lol.....although i cant remember any other females that i would have named it for ......

woody, yeah, I knew someone would mention that. That sure is a good reason. Only thing I don't get is naming a boat after a living person who is there on the boat with you. What? You can't remember either to person's name or the boat's name? :)

Scott, many have suggested that it's just a great excuse for a party. Guess you two don't need no steenkin' 'scuses, eh?

Before I got married many times I would forget my dates name - of course many times it just wasn't important. :naughty:

I will admit the name of our current boat is the one it had from the previous owner. There are several reasons: 1) I had no better name idea, 2) it was documented and it just seemed easier to change as little as possible on the documentation paper work, and 3) it had nice $400 graphics and I was too cheap to get new graphics. :eek:

when i was younger..... working on tuna boats outta Sandy Eggo..... good luck and bad luck was always a concern for the older guys..... nobody was gonna rename a boat..... to do so was considered a Jonah...... and back then i think every fisherman was superstitious, but then for a chance to have a good bash with your buddies, drink to much and get a bit foolish..... hell yes rename that boat.....:D
