I'm looking for a paint for my boot stripe that neither WM nor Jamestown seem to have. I want a boot stripe that is the color of bronze. I've seen it on a couple of boats (the owners are nowhere in sight to ask). Does any one know of a source for paint suitable for this purpose that offers colors not found at WM?

Thanks.

Are you seeing the VC17? That is copper colored and looks like bronze with time...

What I saw was definitely the boot stripe--the boat was is out of the water. What about gold paint that's used for the cove stripe?

Just a thought if "normal" brands of hull/topside paint isn't available in the color you want..........

FRP = fiberglas reinforced plastic

What about one of the hardware store paints for plastic? Spray can style might work. Dupont? Krylon? (as often suggested try it first on a small spot that won't show. Of course when dealing with a boot stripe I don't know where that might be. Maybe on someone else's boat first.)

Let us know how this project turns out.

The majority of boot stripes I've seen, and painted, were simply a good enamel (NOT Polyurethane) so any good paint store should be able to make up what you want.

Personally, I paint the bottom paint up to the top of what would be the boot stripe. But then I cruise, and the payload varies greatly

We are with TSBB 2,

I use an ablative bottom paint of a color that matches our beauty strip just below deck level. And Like TS we cruise and the load varies a lot.

I ran around looking for paint to do the same and ended up at a car paint supplier.
Mine is a 2 part metal flake (only way to get bronze) bronze "Matrix Automotive Finishes". I looked at the can but can't tell what kind of paint and don't remember. Smallest quantity I could get mixed (color) was a qt at about $40.
I put it on with a cheap natural brush from Harbor Freight and it flowed out great and looked like it was sprayed.
After all the work I did I wasn't going to slap hardware store FL numbers on it so I went to a sign place and they made them in bronze (again metal flake, all they had in this color) and times new roman instead of block letters.
I'm happy with the way it came out and the auto paint has held up much better than the 1 part poly boat paint.

Try www.signaturefinish.com

They also make pigmented boat paint (2-part acrylic-urethane) and can make up just about any custom color you want, and in small quantities. Their faux-spruce paint ... used for making aluminum spars look like actual spruce wood is probably pretty close to the hue you want. You'll need to send a color sample of 'something' close to the color you want.
I use their paint for my bootstripe, and its one of the best bootstripe paints Ive ever found.

Caution: bronze, copper and low allow gold paints or paints made with micronized metals will quickly turn color when in contact with water/seawater .... they usually need to be over-coated heavily with 'clear' (2-part) to prevent corrosion and discoloration of the metal flake and/or ultra-fine metal powders in such paints.

Rather than paint try 3m tape or other.
The tape is much longer lasting than paint (on one of my boats 20yrs.)
cheers

My boat was just painted. The painter made a mistake and painted the boot stripe the same as the upper strip just under the rub rail. I had him redo it in white as I had originally wanted. Now come to think of it maybe I should have kept it the same color. The paint is an awgrip color. Is this the color you were seeing?
