Want to know how to get a slight bit more speed out of your little beauty?? Of course you do!! The most important telltale on the jib is the middle one -- on the mainsail it's the top one. If the middle telltale on your jib is lifting like the bottom one in the picture -- TRIM IN the jib sheet until both the inside and outside are streaming back. If the outside telltale is lift, EASE OUT the jib until both stream back. Also, try to adjust your heel to about 15 degrees.

Yep, that's Morro Rock. I was sailing by myself and wanted to get a picture of the seals. I had just turned so they were passing on my left, had my hands full adjusting sails right after tack, then, couldn't hardly see to unlock my phone due to the glare, let alone being able to see what I was pointing it at. By the time I adjusted sail, a good puff came up, I was passing by the seals and they were then at my back. So I just pointed the phone over my shoulder behind me and pressed the button a few times, then pointed it forward and pressed the button a few more times--I couldn't see what I was actually pointing at. I thought these two pictures turned out pretty good, considering.

And that telltale has been stuck to the sail annoying me for a long time, but I always forget to do something about it. Which proves I rarely use them--too busy checking out the sights!

lokiii: Yes, the telltale looks the way it should.

Telltales are extremely important and are absolutely the most important sail trim indicator on the boat. No non-electric devise has been developed that approaches the sensitivity and effectiveness of telltales on the main and jib. I devote about 7 pages in my book concerning reading telltales and adjusting your sails to what they are telling you.

Additionally, most times they're the differencee between 1st and 2nd!!!
