The sheaves in the blocks on the deck to lead the sheets back to the winch are shot, both port and starboard.

Thought I saw an e-mail on this earlier. I have not been able to find the (Schaefer?) blocks online. It is a flat base with four bolts and nuts underneath, and a spring block spring attached to base. Do not want to have to drill new holes, fill old ones, etc. for new blocks with different configurations if I do not need to do so.

Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

Are the bases round, square, rectangular??? A quick google of Schaefer stand up blocks brings up quick references w/ pics to blocks with round bases. Just a quick check. More available.

Bases are square. Will check Schaefer again. Thanks.

What about these?

Not sure if the holes line up as these are round bases.... Re-doing the holes is actually pretty east if you can't find square base. I can't find any online from any retailers so you may have to go eBay, CragsList and hope or just bite the bullet and do round bases and new holes.

Someone I know, I can't remember which of the myriad forums I obsessively follow, drilled out the pins and replaced Antal sheaves in cheek blocks, and re-peened new pins. But for a few bucks more, and less work, replacing the whole thing would be easier.

Last night, I was looking hard at the top and bottom telltales on the jib of my 192, and I saw that I could get the bottom telltales flying, but not always the top. Which got me to thinking about replacing the single standup block on my cabin top, with an adjustable track... Which got me to thinking I shouldn't bother until I get a 135% genoa and mount tracks on the side decks, which got me to thinking about Schaefer Snap-Furls, which got me to realizing I don't want to spend the money, and the boat sails pretty good as is. So I talked myself into, and OUT OF, several projects... That's no fun... Or is it? :D

Certainly, the best option (since something has to be done) is to add track and cars to have the adjustability. Costly, however, and, since ddooher asked only about replacing what he has (and they have now been found) he has options.

Thanks.
D&R Marine has blocks, Garhauer, that are considerably less expensive. Not exactly the same, assuming the new plate can cover the old area, for two blocks, it is about $130 less.

I bought the blocks from Rudy. The bases will cover the area of the old blocks. The mounting bolts are bigger, 1/4". I drilled new holes for the 1/4" bolts. Then I used an oversize bit to drill the holes bigger but I stopped short from drilling through the inside skin. I filled with epoxy and re drilled for the 1/4" bolts. I sealed with Maine's butyl tape. No leaks.
I liked the sturdy backing plates that came with the blocks.
I considered putting in a track for adjustable positioning but didn't want the additional cost or work.
FYI, Rudy's pricing matched Garhaurer's site.

The Defender catologue notes that Schaefer will replace/install new sheaves in their blocks. Call 508 995-9511 to ask about your blocks. They "do not recommend replacing sheaves yourself" ... for obvious reasons. I am amazed how durable the plastic (delrin) sheaves are. Blocks on Golden Road are 38 years old, and so far are working fine.
