FYI the Ericson Yachts website was hacked yesterday; this is all that is posted at ericsonyachts.org right now:

11 pm, September 9th, 2013 - EY.o HACKED.

So where's the site, you ask?

Well, tonight, some malcontent with nothing better to do in their lives than hose over a group of sailboat owners hacked our website and laced the db full of obscene messages, words, etc.

At this time I CANNOT assure you that your email addresses have not been compromised. I have had the database disabled - so it's suspended right now until I can get a handle on the level of damage and what our options are going forward. No one can see the db right now - so it's safe as of now - but what they may have already done is unknown at this point (too early to tell).

The problem that I immedately see right now is that the way they pulled this off was to create admin-level accounts and then run scripts against the db, altering the threads and all the settings (descriptions, etc). If you receive ANY MAIL - AT ALL - DIRECTLY FROM EY.o - DO NOT OPEN IT. Instead, please email me (below) and advise that you recieved something from "the site".

I will update this page on a regular basis until I know what's happening - however, as many of you know, I finished grad school, and am now working again full time - so it's going to take a little while to do this. I would think that hopefully by this weekend we'll have a solution in place.

I apologize to all of you for this. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at ********** - and I'll reply to you on my gmail account. I don't want to list it here, for obvious reasons until I get a better handle on this.

Thanks for your patience.

Stay Alert...

vBulletin site software seems to be fairly common on other sailing sites as well. I just hope that whatever vulnerability allowed this is not being exploited here or on other similar sites.

This really irks me.

You know, the damn world is crazy. Whatever in the world would possess an individual to dedicate the time, to hack a sailboat site is beyond my thinking..

If it was the actual website and not just a bulletin board on the website, then the fault lies with the hosting provider and their (lack of) security. I find it interesting that someone was able to hack into a host machine and attack one specific user of that machine. If they really got into the EY website and only attacked that site, I wonder. Why stop there? Why not other webpages on that host machine?

Very interesting. Sorry to hear this happened. Who was hosting the website?

Sorry that I do know that info.
My duties, such as they are, have always been to try and maintain some semblance of 'law n order' on several thousand diverse posters......

Mark,

Thanks for the heads up. So far, I haven't received anything, if I do I'll let you know.
