Need Advice on replacing Transducer.....

I am planning to replace the old Datamarine, S200DL with a new thru-hull transducer. Not sure if it was standard with all H34’s but there are 2 thru-hull locations in the forward berth area. Those were designed and cut for the Datamarine transducers whose diameter is smaller than the various transducers made by Airmart. Which would integrate into my Raymarine E7D. So do I

  1. Leave the existing transducers in? (The Knotmeter doesn’t work)
  2. Enlarge one of the existing hole and leave the still working S200DL?
  3. Have someone seal the existing holes and cut a new one?

The fact that your existing transducer is smaller makes it real easy.
On the outside of the boat, locate the center of the depth transducer face. Mark it with a felt pen or similar.
Now, just drill a 1/4" hole through the center of the existing depth sounder xducer.
Next step, take the correct hole saw for the new transducer, and use the 1/4" hole as your pilot.
For the speed xducer, it is slightly more difficult.
Make a wooden dowel that will just fit into the speed xducer hole.
If it is a little undersized, goop it with epoxy, and put it in & let cure.
Then do the same drill out routine.

Thanks Artboas! That would never of occurred me to do that, but it makes so much sense! Thanks!

Do I need a special hole saw to cut fiberglass with?

You need a good quality hole saw. Milwaukee is a good bet,
You will find this job very easy doing as described.
Use 5200 to seal in new xducer.
Be sure to use a back up plate on the inside.

If the transducer is plastic, do not use 5200, it will weaken the plastic. Check the specs on different caulks, for one that is compatable with plastics and can be used under water. Also stay away from silicones.

Definitely wrong to use silicone.
Never heard of any problems with 5200 & through hull fittings, except that once they're in, they are impossible to remove. (Except in many pieces)
