This pop-top cabin enclosure on the sailboatowners store looks pretty nice. Does anybody have experience with it? How does it work in practice?

Also, they don't list the Hunter 23 specifically under models available. How different is the Hunter 23.5 cabin top?

We have one with our 99 H260. Haven't used it yet. (Haven't even splashed, yet.) If anyone can figure out how to make it work on a 23, it'll be you. Good luck!

I tried to get one ordered for a 2008 H25 but they did not have the pattern and were too "busy" to get one sized up. Not very impressed by the store :(
They appear to be supported at the front by the open hatch so closing it will drop the canvas.

My 23.5 came with a hood which was apparently unused. I use regularly when alongside or at anchor. The hood obstructs the view forward from the cockpit too much to leave up when underway. The hood takes less than five minutes to rig and gives full standing headroom below, very handy when say pulling up one's pants! Mine is the cheaper model with isinglass windows permanently fitted. I understand a better version allows the removal of the isinglass and zipping in screens. I did buy a zip in screen for the companionway. The forward end of the hood is supported by the raised sliding hatch. The after end of the hood is supported by a specially curved aluminum tube which mounts in holes molded in both sides of the hatchway. The hood is a very useful bit of kit and well worth getting for anyone doing overnights on the boat.

Kind regards

Hugh

The 23 was the wing keel sailboat, not the waterballast. Ok, I forgot but can one tell me if the lslider hatch only goes back without being tilted upward. Contact the web forum to see if they have one for the 23 and if not, go to Ameriseam and talk with them to see if they have the pattern. If so, contact this forum for ordering for you.

On my '91 hull 23, the hatch does tilt up. It is rather heavy, and also there are no struts to hold it up, so you'd need to rig some or (if you don't have a hood) you could tie it up to the mast.

I added struts to my hatch. It lifts up like a trunk lid now and stays up. I really like the idea of that pop top enclosure since I'm 6'2" and as Hugh Straub said, putting on pants is a real challenge on overnights if it's raining out and I don't want to open everything up.

How did you mount the struts and what size did you use?

I love mine! We had a screen added to the companionway area. Great for airflow and the standing headroom makes it nice and roomy.
