After a sail, when we restart the engine, sometimes (but not all the time) the Raymarine speed instrument loses all the data, such as how far we have gone, top speed, etc. We used to think it happened when we changed the battery to "both" to restart the engine. But we are finding it starts just fine without turning the battery to both but we still lose the info when we start the engine. Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it?

This usually happens when starting the engine because of the short, sharp voltage drop when the starter motor engages.
You might try isolating your electronics from your starter battery, making one battery the start battery and the other "house" battery to which you can hook up your electronics and only use "both" if necessary.

Not quite sure I understand what you mean by "isolate". #1 is the starter battery, #2 is the house battery. We need to put it on both to initially start the engine. Then we usually put it on 2 while we sail. If we turn it to 1 to restart the engine, wouldn't everything hooked up to the house battery turn off?

I'm assuming your boat is wired with a simple 1,2,1+2 switch.
This type of battery control is very rudimentary and offers little flexibility. As others have suggested look into isolating your starter battery, and charging it with a ACR (Automatic Charging Relay) or other device. Your boat (and electronics) will thank you.
You shouldn't need both batteries to start your engine, which may be part of the problem. You might want to hydrometer your batteries? One or both may need replacement.

I would agree that you should NOT need both batteries to start you engine. We always start our engine off the house bank (BATTERY POSITION 1 in our case). This always leaves our starting battery in reserve.
If you need both batteries, this could be your problem. You may need new batteries. Get those batteries load tested.

If the batteries check out, I would look for a poor connection to the electronics from the batteries. If you have a high resistance in the power or ground line that is supplying your electronics, you could have a marginally low voltage all the time to your instruments and when starting the engine the momentary voltage drop resets everything. What you are experiencing is not normal.
