Faux Teak

The cabin sole on my 92 C 30 is white, slightly pebbled fiberglass with teak and holly plywood cutouts for the bilge and shaft access covers. It's very nice looking and makes the cabin look bright and neat. But it also shows every speck of dirt and is difficult to clean.

I'm thinking about having one of the faux teak coverings installed and wanted to see what people's experience has been. I expect that I would be looking at using a professional installer since this looks like it is beyond my limited skill set.

My personal motto is " The thing that I love about sailing is that it gives me so many opportunities to learn from my mistakes"

So I would really rather not screw this up.

Thanks for any insights from your experiences

John

Consider carpet.

Syntec Industries makes a striped carpet that simulates a wood stripped cabin sole:

Find a marine carpet retailer and ask about getting some of this. To really do it right, make a craft-paper pattern of your sole and get it to them and have them cut and bind it.

See how it looks when installed. This is what I did in my boat. Pretty snappy...

Thanks, that's interesting it looks like it would be comfortable under foot, but I want to stay away from carpeting. I had it on another boat and didn't love it. I'm looking for a more solid surfacing option.

I had a Plasteak sole installed several years ago and was happy with the outcome. The material was purchased at Dedender (it is not cheap and you have to buy a lot more glue than you'll need) and I had a local floor installer put it in. They lined up the pieces with the teak and holly cutouts and even seasoned sailors think it is wood. The total cost was about $700. It has good grip and cleans up nicely. Good luck...John

Nice looking cabin interior Phil, I like the leather look too. How is that holding up for you?

So far so good. I'm still bench-sailing as the boat is still in the shop. Still, I spend lots of time in the boat and it is holding up under my backside during my "chill" time watching TV and enjoying a beverage.
