Digital display for hour engine hour meter not working. Wondering about most likely cause. Sending unit from alternator or display unit faulty. Would appreciate any pointers or if any one has had a similar problem. Boat is a Hunter 36' 2007 with Yanmar instrument panel.

Problem: meter kaput

Solution: http://www.egauges.com/vdo_ind.asp?Type=Tachometer&Series=Vision&PN=333-163

The reason I suggest this one is that it has the same diameter as the old meter I removed. Check the specs just to be sure it matches yours. This was the cheapest supplier I could find several years ago but you may do better elsewhere today.

Check out WEMAUSA.

I installed ours and it does NOT have a sending unit. It is wired to the ignition when the key is on the hours are accumulating.

You may want to test if you are getting power to the unit first.

I replaced my Engine Hour meter in Jun-2006. It was made by Faria. I ordered a Faria Model No. MH009E from Shipsstore.co. Total cost delivered to my house was $56.26. I installed and it worked fine and still does today. As others said, it runs when it receives 12Vdc. It's source of the 12 V is the laod side of the ignition switch on the Yanmar panel. As long as the ignition switch is on the meter counts hours. I did make a note of the current engine hours on the engine at the time of replacement and printed up a little saying "Add 1297 hours to Eng. Hr. Meter reading to get total engine hours" and placed it under the Eng. Hr. meter. You gould just power up the new meter with 12Vdc for however many hours you had on the old one so that the new one is "current". I was too impatient to do that. The label works fine.

I have had a similar "no display" issue with my engine hours LCD under my tach meter on a Hunter 36 2009, with a 3YM30 Yanmar engine. If you disassemble the display panel in the cockpit, and dry out the connections to the tach/engine hours display with a hair dryer, the hours display on the LCD. This is, however, a purely temporary fix up here in the Pacific Northwest. I have seen other threads here in the same issue. My Yanmar dealer says that the instrument is water resistant, but not waterproof. Nice distinction, but it doesn't help. Those of you who have installed replacements, how did you keep the same problem from re-occurring?

Under the engines and propulsion forum, there is a definitive discussion of this phenomenon and several solutions. The thread is called Engine Hour (LCD) Meter Repair, and dates back to 2009. This seems to be a pervasive issue for boat owners in general, especially those whose engine hour meters are located in the cockpit.

I also have a 2009 36 w/Yanmar 3YM30 and live in the NW. Mine just recently stopped displaying. I will try your temporary fix and observe.
Cheers!

Thanks Ralph for the info on the VDO 333-163 tachometer! Purchased it for $130 US, fits like a glove, easy to calibrate, and looks great! This was replaced on a 2009 Hunter 36. Up here in Vancouver Canada the price for the VDO Yanmar tach is (hold your breath) $750 Canadian. Believe it or not, the number one Yanmar retailer & service provider said, that three of these have been purchased in the last year...someone has more money than they know what to do with and can you say, middle man?

Cheers!

.................... I have GOT to find out where these suckers, I mean consumers are located, as I see a road to early retirement here.

I never purchase boating gear over $50.00 in Canada but always purchase in the States (SBO Store) through the web. In most cases its a 30% saving or more. I pick up at a postal holding station in Blaine, Washington every month or so, sharing the trips with a few other like minded friends who do the same. I'm as loyal as the next Canuck but these *&^%$# retail bastards up here just can't seem to get it through their thick heads to take a "reasonable" profit and be happy with it. Boating gear is bad but you should see what we pay for cars. And then they have the gall to whine about Canadians choosing to shop south of the border.

I love this country dearly but our retailers can go take a flying leap.

Here's some more Ralph. Honda EU2000i generator all in, in Canada $1500...$949 all in, in US. Even when you factor in duty for those moored in Canadian marinas its a good buy. I'm moored in Point Bob, Washington so over the years it pays itself off. Smart plug 30 amp connector and Furion 15 amp male plug...$80 in US...$160 all in, in Canada. Anything that you own and floats is a luxury... And costs. You have to look for the best buys to prevent from financially sinking due to upkeep.

????? Oh Canada!
