I've read about steping the mast on a 170 without help, using the trailer winch. Can anyone tell me how to go about this? Boat is in the water and will be brought up to a beach to fix a problem at top of the mast. Thanks

I did it yesterday with the help of a dock rope tied to the trailer post (could use the ring at the front of the boat). I kept the rope within reach as I walked the mast up, then secured the mast upright with the rope until I could secure the jib line. It was not hard. I suppose the trailer winch would offer the same and could add the needed tension to make it easier.

Before I started using Johnson quick release shroud adjusters (highly recommended if you do step regularily), this is what I did--a cut and paste from another old thread and describes putting mast up, but you may follow advice backwards:

I keep mast stays intact and don't undo them. Lift mast midway and walk to back of boat, spear mast into block, then walk it forward/upright. While holding mast upright with one hand, take halyard in other hand. Send halyard around the stays to the front. Hook halyard to one of the front cleats. Tighten other end of halyard line (tight!) to mast cleat. Undo trailer winch hook from bow eyelet and attach to halyard hook and turn winch (while keeping tension on halyard line so mast doesn't fall backward) to bend the mast forward. Pin forstay/jib to roller furler. Unwinch halyard and hook winch back to bow eyelet (so boat doesn't float away when ramping it in).

Hope that helps!

Tim
