I own a 1991 Hunter Legend 355 with swept-back spreaders. Question: How does one sail downwind without having the Mainsail pressed into the Spreaders? Can it just not be done?

Where is inside location of the knotmeter-wheel?? I need to clean it but can't find it? Any ideas?

It's always faster sailing off the wind so most people avoid dead down wind regardless of the spreader issue. Can't help with your other q

Like Don, most folks hate sailing dead down wind. Of course, sometimes you just have to. One suggestion is to be sure you are vanged down hard to reduce the chafe by the spreader tips.

Jhildy: I have a 91 375 and I believe placement of the speed sensor is the same on your boat - under the starboard floorboard in the bow berth. Obviously be careful pulling it in the water. I assume you have the replacement plug for it. MIne gets gummed up all the time. When I know I won't be sailing for some time I take it out and just leave the plug in on the mooring.

I don't have a real issue with putting the main on the spreaders when the need arises. That is why my sail has extra cloth in those areas to protect the sail.

Thanks Don. I enjoy sailing wing-wing. I guess I can do so for short periods of time and not hurt the sail, just not generally a good practice.

the knot meter on a 35.5 is located under the front Vberth, slide open the plexiglass panels under the V berth, you can remove them by lifting the bottom section off the track and pushing them inside the storage area. At the bottom of this little storage compartment, there is a panel that you lift and the knot meter and depth sensor are located there. When we sail dead downwind the main is always in contact with the spreader.

The knotlog on our boats is very badly located to one side of the bow under the V berth. You will never get an accurate reading of boat speed and the opposite tack will never agree. I relocated the log to the center-line of the boat 18" in front of the keel with an access plate in the floor for fast ease removal. I used a self-seal log that closes as the impeller is extracted and then insert a plug while not onboard. This way the log is always clean and never needs service. As a result of the location both tacks have accurate readings.
