Last weekend I had a courtesy inspection by the coast guard auxiliary. Long story short is they wouldn't give me a pass because I didn't have a steaming light mounted somewhere below the top of the mast. My boat is a 2008 Hunter 36. There is a switch for both anchor light and steaming light which when observed from a distance changes the light configuration of the masthead light to conform to the rule of 'Masthead lights are white and shine from 112.5° on the port side through dead ahead to 112.5° on the starboard side. They must be above the sidelights' for steaming.
When switched to anchoring the light becomes an all around light.
I'm just wondering if there is a rule I don't know about or do these auxiliary's need to bone up on the regs.
