My wife and I found that we were always stuffing clothes into the side rails in the v berth so I sewed up six flaps (3 per side) that are secured to the inside of the rails and that flop down over the rail to load up with rolled clothing. They are then secured in the up position (seen in the photo) with twist lock fasteners. This is a great way to free up drawer space and use neglected space along the v berth walls.

all the little things are BIG.... collectively
as small as some of the mods and add-ons may seem, when occupying such a small space, they can make a tremendous improvement in the livability and comfort of what is left after we load the area with gear....
I really like the dinette and tableware closet that Ross has posted. it uses very little space yet it opens up to be a large and fully functional dinnette....
...a modified keel winch handle... so it can be stowed out of the way...
...a homemade cover for the ugly propane bottle, so it can hang from the grill without looking so out of place...
...an organizer for the front of a camp cot, purchased at the sporting good store and added a few snaps to create a cockpit organizer....

I want more info on the modded winch handle. My right foot still has a sore spot from kicking that stupid thing last time out.
my small niece made use of the winch handle as an intermediate step when getting in or out, but ive had my share of scrapes with it, and having clothing and lines hang up on it when pulling them out of the cabin. so i fixed it. but she can still use it as a step when she visits
you can hold the drum of the winch and unscrew the handle from the shaft...
then you can cut the handle stock free of the hub.....
then take three, 3/4" nuts and drill out the threads in the center so they will slip over the pilot shaft of the winch (a little bigger than 1/2")....
stack them on a rod or dowel so that they will be perfectly aligned, so you can weld them together to make one triple high nut.... then weld the stack to the hub that you cut free of the handle. make sure its square and true.... then screw it back on the winch.
then weld a deep-well 3/4" socket to the handle stock....
slip it on the hub when you want to crank, and when its not needed, keep it out of the way in a winch handle pocket on the rear side of the bulkhead board next to the winch.....
I trailer sail so I was looking for a way to organize my lines. I bought a set of line holders (available here in the chandlery) and attached them to a keep box. I also labeled them not because I am OCD (well, maybe a little) but so I can ask anyone to get a specific line when I am setting up and know they'll pick the right one.
Also because I trailer sail there is the issue of tranporting the outboard, so I used the two board method on the tongue. Since this photo was taken I've added a bumber on the board near the bottom of the tail of the motor. Also, on the trailer I added a bow safety chain after seein two power boats roll off their trailers at the ramp last year.

Ok Centerline inspired me. I decided to do it a little differently though. I've always hated that winch handle, it looks like it belongs on a trailer, not a boat. I also wanted to retain the nut and spring that keeps everything from completely unscrewing.
So here's what I did. After cutting the old handle off and smoothing things out I added a piece of tubing with a large enough ID for the socket that fits that nut. I then cut out a little bracket that will allow me to use a standard sheet winch handle. As it turns out my sheet winch handle was significantly longer than the original keel handle, so I bent the bracket to allow it to be inserted backwards to limit the swing. The installed pics were just test fitting, without the final welds finished. It's all finished and waiting for paint to dry now.

thats a good way to save a pound or two and your gonna like not having the winch handle in the way all the time
The other nice thing is that if I somehow lose the winch handle it's not something custom. I can go to any store to buy a new one, and every sail boat at the dock will have one I can borrow to get the keel up.

Ross, what a great idea!! We have magazine/book racks there already, and I never thought about putting plates etc. there! Actually we play more games at the table than eat there so I'll see if our Yatzee, Scrabble and other assorted entertainment can fit there. Beautiful detail and so well done.
Couple finished pics of my new keel winch setup. Turns out the angle of the tab is just right so that when you hang the handle on it the wrong way it rests flush against the bulkhead, so only the handle sticks out. Even with it in place thats WAY better than before. Thanks again for giving me the push I needed to do this Centerline. I'm really looking forward to giving it a full test next week.

no pics but I took my swing keel hand winch out and put in a small electric "super winch".

I would really like to do this to my boat, but would insist on a good method for manual backup. What and where did you get the electric winch?
On my 19' O'Day Mariner, I extended the amount of galley counter space [originally none] under my one burner stove. Also protects the v-berth cushions and folds away.
